Region profile

History

DOC established 1988 to give Vino Nobile producers flexibility with younger vines and quicker revenue while waiting for Nobile to age (24-36 months). Parent appellation Vino Nobile documented since 789 AD (cleric Arnipert deed). Francesco Redi 1685 "Bacchus in Tuscany": Montepulciano is king of all wines. Pope Paul III's cellarman 1530 called it "vino perfectissimo". Vino Nobile became Italy's first DOCG 1980 (with Brunello, Barolo). Consorzio del Vino Nobile founded 1965 to protect both Nobile and Rosso.

Climate
Continental-Mediterranean between Valdichiana and Val d'Orcia valleys; 250-600m altitude (minimum 250m); cooler nights; sandy-clay soils provide aromatic elegance (sand) and structure (clay); less galestro than Chianti, more balanced minerality
Signature wines
Boscarelli (Ferrari family since 1964, soil experiments: sandy=aromatic, clay=power, red=depth); Poliziano (288-acre Carletti estate since 1960); Avignonesi (100% biodynamic since 2008); Dei (high slopes below village, deep structured style); Le Casalte; La Braccesca (Antinori)
What sets it apart
Vino Nobile's 'little brother' - same Prugnolo Gentile terroir, 1/6 the aging time; DOC 1988 created for younger vines revenue; 390ha (1/3 of Nobile); Alliance Vinum project (Boscarelli, Avignonesi, Dei, Poliziano, La Braccesca, Salcheto) pure Sangiovese terroir wines; sandy-clay soils unique balance (vs galestro elsewhere); first Italian denomination with Equalitas sustainability certification 2022
