Ancient aromatic variety cultivated centuries in Monferrato hills - near-extinct by 1970s (considered "secondary wine"). 1970s: Parish priest Don Giacomo Cauda of Castagnole Monferrato rescued old church vineyard vines, refined dry wine style. First bottled as "Ruchè del Parroco" (Priest's Ruchè), proceeds funded church restoration. Mayor Lidia Bianco and village teacher Romana Valenzano championed recognition. DOC 1987 (presidential decree October 22). DOCG 2010 elevation. Production explosion: 432,000 bottles (2010) → 1.1 million (2022). DNA analysis revealed Malvasia Aromatica di Parma × Croatina parentage. Now 21 wineries, 35% exported USA/Asia. Association of Producers formed 2000/2015.
