History

Soave region cultivated Garganega for centuries. DOC status recognized quality white wine production from 13 municipalities. Late 1990s production peaked at 6.6 million cases annually. Soave Superiore DOCG created 2001 within Classico + Colli Scaligeri sub-zones, representing higher quality tier. Recioto di Soave DOCG (sweet passito) granted 1998 as first Veneto DOCG. Today Soave DOC produces 99.5% of region's wine (30 million bottles), while Superiore DOCG represents <1%. Over 50% exported internationally (Germany, UK primary markets, 6% USA). Volcanic basalt soils create mineral-driven profile. Garganega's high acidity enables age-worthiness even in DOC tier.
