Region profile

History

Vernaccia Nera cultivated Serrapetrona hills since 15th century at least. Wine mentioned in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, establishing medieval prestige. For centuries, sparkling red passito made using unique triple fermentation method found nowhere else in Italy. DOC recognition 1971 protecting traditional method. 2004: elevated to DOCG - Marche's FIRST DOCG designation, recognizing cultural and enological importance. Appassimenti Aperti festival created to celebrate tradition (November, when wineries open drying rooms). Modern DNA analysis confirmed Vernaccia Nera genetically identical to Grenache - but local Serrapetrona name predates identification. Production remains tiny (21ha, <9,000 cases) but culturally significant.
