History
Earliest records 970 AD (Pope John XIII granted fiefs). Colonna family ownership 1043-1622. Etymology possibly "Sagariorum vicus" (Roman sagum/soldier's cloak production center). 1552: Community Statutes regulated viticulture (predating DOC by 421 years). 1881: Tufaio winery founded - began quality transformation "from mass production emphasizing quantity to smaller productions emphasizing quality." DOC 1973. Palazzo Rospigliosi (Colonna castle since 13th century, Rospigliosi family 1670 via Pope Clement IX's nephew's marriage). Modern: Cantina del Tufaio (15,000 bottles/year), Vini Federici (Le Puche) leading quality revival.

- Warm Mediterranean with volcanic influence; Castelli Romani hills 25km southeast of Rome; tuff plateau between two valleys; 300-600m altitude; volcanic soils from extinct Alban Hills volcano (weathered basalt, tufa clay, calcareous); Tyrrhenian Sea 20km west provides cooling; municipalities: Zagarolo, Gallicano nel Lazio (entire), partial San Cesareo; cellars hand-dug into hillside tuff (natural 12.5°C temperature)
