Parking: No cars on Don Det/Don Khon - bicycle island. Motorbikes park at guesthouses.
Nearest airport: Pakse International Airport (PKZ)
Drinking and driving: Beer Lao is the default. Wine is rare and expensive on the islands - stock up in Pakse if you must have wine. NEVER ride drunk on the Bolaven Loop - roads are challenging.
Other airports: Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand (UBP) - 90 min to Pakse by bus, good budget airline connections
Siem Reap, Cambodia (REP) - 6-8 hour bus via border crossing
Without a car: Bus from Pakse to Nakasang (4000 Islands gateway): 3 hours, 50,000-80,000 kip. Rent bicycles on the islands (20,000 kip/day) and motorbikes (100,000-150,000 kip/day). For Bolaven Plateau: rent motorbike in Pakse (100,000-150,000 kip/day).

Base yourself in: 4000 Islands (Don Det or Don Khon)
Why there: Don Det is the party island - social, lively, cheaper. Don Khon is quieter, more couples/families. Stay on Don Det's sunset side (west bank) for golden hour magic. For Bolaven Loop, overnight at Tad Lo village.
Booking tip: High season (Nov-Feb): book Don Det sunset bungalows 3-5 days ahead or arrive before 14:00. Tad Lo is usually walk-in OK.

Peak season: Peak: December-January. Prices spike 20-30% and sunset bungalows fill by noon.

Shoestring: Don Det basic bungalows: $5-8/night, fan, shared bath, hammock. Look for "sunset side" signs. Mr. B's and Last Bar have cheap bungalows.
Wanderer: Don Det river bungalows: $15-25/night, private bath, balcony, river view. Mama Leuah Guesthouse, Little Eden. Tad Lo: Tim's Guesthouse $10-15/night.

If you only have one day: Impossible to do justice in one day. Minimum 2 days: Don Det sunset (Day 1) + dolphin dawn (Day 2 morning).
If it rains: Don Det/Don Khon: hammock + book + Beer Lao. Tad Lo: waterfall viewing is BETTER in rain (more powerful). Bolaven: coffee farm tours still good, waterfalls impressive.

DON'T expect to see dolphins 100% - they're wild and rare. Dawn is best but not guaranteed.
DON'T do Bolaven Loop by motorbike in wet season unless experienced - slippery
DON'T pack too much - you'll be biking everywhere on the islands
DON'T skip bringing cash - ATMs on islands are unreliable, nearest reliable ATM is Pakse
