Yerevan - Wine capital of Armenia with Ararat views
From the top of the Cascade stairway, Mount Ararat is visible — 5,137 metres of snow, 50 kilometres away in Turkey. Armenians consider it their holiest mountain. They can see it on a clear day. They cannot visit it. Genesis says Noah planted the first vineyard on its slopes after the Flood. At a wine bar 572 steps below, a sommelier pours you Areni Noir — whose grape DNA is unbroken for 6,100 years — and can tell you, if you ask, that Winston Churchill demanded 400 bottles of Armenian brandy per year after tasting it at Yalta in 1945. This is a city that holds its history as grief and its wine as something much older.

Areni-1 cave - world's oldest winery (6,100 years old)
In 2007, archaeologist Boris Gasparyan dug into the first gallery of a cave behind a village restaurant and found a 1-metre clay basin still coated with the pigment of red wine — pressed there in 4100 BC. Inside the same cave: the world's oldest leather shoe (5,500 years old, size EU 37, stuffed with grass), and three ceramic pots containing the plastered skulls of young women. The same people making wine here were performing burial rites here. Production facility and sacred space at once. The grape seeds found alongside the press are genetically identical to the Areni Noir vines still growing in this valley. You can drink that grape 50 metres from where it was first fermented, at a tasting room that opened next to the cave entrance in 2024.

Noravank monastery with vineyard terraces
In 1339, an architect named Momik built a narrow external staircase onto the face of a church — no handrail, one person wide, 8 metres off the ground. It was his final work before he died, and it is among the earliest cantilever staircases ever built. From the top step you look out across a gorge of iron-oxide limestone that turns blood-red at sunset, the same gorge where monks tended vineyards for 700 years and blessed harvest grapes before pressing. This monastery was also connected to the famed medieval university at Gladzor — where Armenian scholars copied illuminated manuscripts in the chambers beneath these same cliffs. Noravank was never a footnote. It was the intellectual and spiritual center of the region.

Areni Wine Festival participation
During Soviet rule, Armenian village women made wine in secret — no written recipes, to stay below Soviet scrutiny. They hid karasi clay jars in their cellars and taught daughters by hand. The festival that now draws 100+ producers to Areni village every first October weekend is that same wine, now legal. Some karasi jars at the festival are 150 years old. The opening ceremony is a barefoot grape pressing to live duduk music — the same instrument Armenians have played since before Rome existed. The 3,500 AMD tasting glass gets you every table. The cave where this grape was first fermented, 6,100 years ago, is 3 kilometres up the road.

Vayots Dzor high-altitude wineries
When phylloxera destroyed 90% of Europe's vines between 1863 and 1880, Vayots Dzor was too high for the louse to reach. So the Armenian government made grafting ILLEGAL here — to keep the genetic purity intact. Every vine is ungrafted, own-root, and the Areni Noir growing roadside in Areni village carries DNA identical to grape seeds from the cave where wine was first made 6,100 years ago. Zorik and Yeraz Gharibian searched village-to-village for years to find 30 functional 19th-century karasi clay jars — because no one has been able to make new ones since the last master potters died in the Soviet era. Touch one at Zorah's cellar. The wine convecting inside is Armenia's most internationally celebrated.
