Drinking and driving
ACCEPT WINE FAILURE - Myanmar is beer/tea country. Wine rare, imported, expensive, usually bad. Myanmar Beer (1,500-2,500 kyats) at sunset temple is the move. BYOB beer in backpack to temples. Upscale hotels (Bagan Lodge, Aureum Palace) have wine lists but expect $25-40 for mediocre bottles.

Without a car
E-BIKE IS KING - 5,000-8,000 kyats/day (~$2.50-4) from any guesthouse. Covers entire archaeological zone. Pedal bikes available but Bagan is HOT and vast. Horse cart is tourist trap. Taxi overkill unless heat destroys you.

Why there
Nyaung U has ATMs, night market, restaurants, hostels - most practical. Old Bagan is inside temple zone - magical but expensive, curfew rules apply.

High season (Nov-Feb): book 2-4 weeks ahead. Hot season (Mar-May): empty, negotiate on arrival. Monsoon (Jun-Oct): cheapest but clouds ruin balloon flights.

If you only have one day
Sunrise at Buledi/Pyathada temple (5:30am), quick Ananda visit (8am), rest through midday heat, Dhammayangyi late afternoon, sunset at uncrowded small temple with cold beer.
If it rains
Hotel day with Myanmar Beer. Some temples have covered areas. Or Nyaung U market shopping for lacquerware.

  • Shwesandaw at sunset - tourist mob scene

  • Don't visit midday (noon-3pm) - brutal heat (35-45°C), bad light, misery
  • Don't rent pedal bike instead of e-bike - Bagan is hot and VAST (40+ sq km)
  • Don't wear shoes you can't remove easily - temple floors sacred, constant on/off
  • Don't expect good wine - Myanmar is beer/tea culture, embrace it
  • Don't ignore travel advisories - post-2021 coup, political situation fluid
