Plan the trip
Getting there and around
- Car required
- No
- Nearest airport
- Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) - Denpasar, Bali, 30 km from Ubud
- Drinking and driving
- Your driver stays sober - that's the point. Never scooter after drinking (police checkpoints frequent). Wine at dinner, not during daytime temple visits (respect sacred sites).
- Other airports
-
- Jakarta (CGK) - connect via domestic flights (Garuda, Lion Air, AirAsia)
- Without a car
- Private driver is king in Bali - negotiate day rates (450,000-600,000 IDR/day, ~$30-40). Grab/Gojek available but less reliable outside tourist zones. Scooter rental (60,000-80,000 IDR/day) if confident. Perama shuttle bus connects tourist areas (cheap but slow).
Where to stay
- Base yourself in
- Ubud (Days 1-2, 5-6), Munduk (Day 3), Sidemen (Day 4), Canggu (Day 7)
- Why there
- Multi-base trail - each area offers distinct experiences. Ubud is the wellness heart, Munduk the mountain escape, Sidemen the quiet retreat, Canggu the beach finale.
- Booking tip
- Ubud books fast - reserve 1-2 weeks ahead, especially yoga-focused properties. Munduk and Sidemen are quieter - 3-5 days ahead OK. Canggu weekends need 1 week advance.
- Nightly range
- $15-300/night
- Peak season
- July-August is peak Western summer tourism (book 2-3 weeks ahead). Nyepi (Balinese Day of Silence) shuts down the entire island - plan around it or embrace the silence.

If your time is short
- Do not miss
-
- Yoga at Yoga Barn or Radiantly Alive - this is THE Ubud experience
- Balinese cooking class with market visit - you'll recreate dishes for years
- Temple ceremony at Tirta Empul - spiritual Bali at its most authentic
- Canggu beach club sunset - the perfect finale
- If you only have one day
- Impossible, but if forced: Tegallalang Rice Terraces sunrise -> Tirta Empul temple -> Yoga Barn class -> Locavore dinner with wine.
- If it rains
- Perfect! Spa day, cooking class, Yoga Barn, wine tasting at Hatten. Bali in the rain is atmospheric.
- Skip if time is short
-
- Sidemen Valley (beautiful but similar to Ubud rice terraces)
- Day 6 massage (can massage in Ubud instead of separate day)
Mistakes to avoid
-
- Don't skip the sarong at temples - you'll be denied entry or forced to rent ugly tourist sarongs
- Don't touch temple offerings or step over them - they're sacred
- Don't drink the tap water - stick to bottled or filtered
- Don't scooter if you're not confident - Bali traffic is chaotic and accidents are common
- Don't negotiate aggressively with drivers - $5 difference means way more to them
- Don't expect Western wine prices - Bali wine is 2-3x retail due to import taxes
- Don't visit rice terraces at midday - brutal heat. Go sunrise or late afternoon.
Worth stopping for
-

- Munduk Waterfalls: Bring waterproof bag. Best light 9-11 AM before clouds roll in.
- Canggu beach clubs: Golden hour 17:00-18:30. Wine glass with ocean and sunset behind.
