Why there
Best balance of beach access, nightlife, and proximity to countryside. Tagbilaran is functional but boring. Panglao has restaurants, bars, dive shops, easy scooter access to everything.
Booking tip
Panglao gets BUSY January-March. Book 1-2 weeks ahead peak season. Walk-in OK June-October. Alona has dozens of options - walk the strip if booking.com is pricey.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Don't skip official Tarsier Sanctuary - roadside "wild" tarsier tours are scams
  • Don't rent scooter if you can't ride - hills are steep, traffic chaotic
  • Don't go to Chocolate Hills at midday - brutal heat, washed-out photos
  • Don't stay in Tagbilaran - it's functional but soulless, Panglao is the action
  • Don't overpay at Alona Beach restaurants - walk 5 min to local spots

Worth stopping for

  • Chocolate Hills: Top of 214-step viewpoint at golden hour (17:00-17:45). Go wide to capture endless hills.
  • Tarsiers: Use phone - big cameras stress them. Morning light is softer. Get close-ish (1 meter).
  • Panglao sunset: Alona Beach faces west - perfect sunset shots. Arrive 30 min before.
  • Scooter roads: GoPro mounted or passenger shoots countryside - very cinematic palm tree roads.
