Getting there and around

Car required: No
Parking: No car rental needed. Everything is flight + shuttle based.
Nearest airport: Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) - main Sabah hub
Drinking and driving: Bring duty-free wine from KK airport before heading to remote areas. Mulu has limited wine selection at resort only. Celebrate the summit with whisky at Kinabalu Park - wine doesn't exist up there.
Other airports: Kuching International Airport (KCH) - if starting from Sarawak side
Miri Airport (MYY) - gateway to Mulu Caves
Sandakan Airport (SDK) - for orangutan sanctuary
Without a car: Multi-airport adventure. NEED 3 internal flights: KK->Sandakan (MASWings/AirAsia, $40-80), Sandakan->Miri (via KK, $80-120), Miri->Mulu (MASWings, $60-100). Ground transport: KK to Kinabalu Park = minivan or tour shuttle. Within cities = Grab or local taxis.

Base yourself in: Kota Kinabalu (Sabah), with stops in Sandakan and Mulu
Why there: KK is your logistics hub - international flights, Kinabalu Park access, and starting point for internal flights. You'll sleep in 4 locations: KK (days 1, 10), Laban Rata hut on Kinabalu (day 2), Sandakan (days 4-5), and Mulu (days 6-8).
Booking tip: KINABALU: Summit permit package INCLUDES Laban Rata accommodation - book 6 months ahead. MULU: Only 3 accommodation options - book 3-4 weeks ahead for dry season.
Nightly range: $10-250/night (varies dramatically by location)
Peak season: June-August is European summer holiday + dry season = highest demand. Chinese New Year (late Jan/Feb) also busy. Book Kinabalu 6 months minimum.

Booking and timing

Lead time: 6 MONTHS for Kinabalu summit permit (non-negotiable). 3-4 weeks for Mulu accommodation. 2 weeks for internal flights.
Visas: Malaysia: 90-day visa-free for most Western nationalities. Sabah and Sarawak are SEPARATE immigration zones - passport required for flights between them.

Closed days: All attractions open daily. Kinabalu trail sometimes closed after heavy rain.
Peak season: March-September is dry season = best weather but highest demand. June-August permits book out 6+ months. Monsoon (Oct-Feb) makes Kinabalu dangerous.
Best time of day: Kinabalu: Summit push starts 2-3 AM for 6 AM sunrise. Sepilok: 10 AM feeding is best. Mulu bat exodus: 5:30 PM daily.
Rainy season: October to February is monsoon - Kinabalu summit often closed. Mulu caves still accessible but trails muddy. Best weather: March-September, April-May is sweet spot.

Do not miss: Mount Kinabalu summit - THE reason to come to Borneo. Non-negotiable.

Deer Cave bat exodus at 5:30 PM - 3 million bats in dragon formation
If you only have one day: Not possible - this is a 7+ day trail minimum. If you only have 1 day in KK, skip the trail and do city + island hopping.
If it rains: Mulu caves work in light rain (underground). Kinabalu is DANGEROUS in rain - summit closes. Sepilok orangutans hide in rain - visit Sun Bear Centre instead.
Skip if time is short: Mulu Adventure Caves (if under 8 days) - focus on Show Caves only
Sandakan city tour - the orangutans are the draw, city is forgettable
KK island hopping - save for a beach trip, not this adventure trail

Mistakes to avoid

DON'T attempt Kinabalu without booking 6 months ahead - permits WILL be sold out
DON'T underestimate altitude sickness - 4,095m is serious. Hydrate, consider Diamox
DON'T bring only trail runners for Kinabalu - need proper hiking boots for rocky summit
DON'T expect phone signal on Kinabalu or in Mulu - download offline maps
DON'T wear bright colors or use flash at Sepilok - stresses the orangutans
DON'T try to connect Sabah and Sarawak by land - it's jungle, no roads. Fly.
DON'T skip travel insurance - medical evacuation from Kinabalu costs $10,000+

Worth stopping for

KINABALU SUNRISE: Bring headlamp + phone for summit. Arrive at Low's Peak by 5:45 AM for best light (6:00-6:15 AM golden hour).
ORANGUTAN ETHICS: No flash photography. Use phone portrait mode from platform. Best shots when they swing overhead - aim UP.
DEER CAVE: Bring headlamp for cave interior. Bat exodus: shoot WIDE as bats spiral out. Video is better than photo.
LABAN RATA: Sunset from the hut deck (5:45 PM) with mountain layers - better than most summit photos.
KK SUNSET: Tanjung Aru Beach at 6:15 PM (sun sets into South China Sea).
