Lien Khuong Airport (DLI) - 30 km south of Dalat, domestic flights from HCMC (50 min), Hanoi (2 hours)
Drinking and driving
Dalat is walkable and chill - wine at the night market then walk home. Never drink and motorbike on mountain roads. The cool climate means you can enjoy wine without the lowland heat exhaustion.
Other airports
  • Cam Ranh/Nha Trang (CXR) - 140 km, 3-hour drive through mountain passes
  • Tan Son Nhat HCMC (SGN) - then bus/flight
Without a car
Sleeper buses from HCMC (7-8 hours, departing 22:00-00:00, 200,000-350,000 VND) are the backpacker standard - arrive for sunrise in the mountains. Futa and Phuong Trang are reliable operators. Flights are faster but bus is the adventure. In Dalat: taxis and Grab available. Rent motorbike only if experienced - mountain roads are winding. Easy Rider guided tours are the safest option.

Why there
Everything is within 15 km of the compact city center. Stay central for night market walking distance, arrange transport for winery and Langbiang.
Booking tip
Dalat books out during Vietnamese holidays (especially New Year and April 30). Weekends see domestic tourist rush. Book 1 week ahead high season, 2-3 days otherwise.

Peak season
Tet (Vietnamese New Year, late Jan/early Feb) sees 3-4x prices and everything booked. Avoid unless you enjoy crowds.

DALAT IS VIETNAM'S WINE CAPITAL. Ladofoods wines: 150,000-350,000 VND/bottle at cellar door (cheaper than anywhere else in Vietnam). Night market wines: 80,000-150,000 VND/bottle. Vang Dalat (mass market brand): 50,000-100,000 VND everywhere. The sparkling is genuinely good - don't dismiss Vietnamese wine here. Strawberry wine (rượu dâu) is sweet but fun. Artichoke wine (rượu atiso) is unique to Dalat - worth trying once.

Rainy season
May-October has afternoon thunderstorms but mornings are usually clear. Langbiang hike is doable if you start early. Rain gear essential. Nights are cool year-round.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Don't dismiss Vietnamese wine before trying Ladofoods - it will surprise you
  • Don't forget a jacket - Dalat is 10-15°C cooler than the lowlands and nights are cold
  • Don't skip the winery booking - they require reservations and you'll be turned away
  • Don't rent a motorbike unless you're experienced - mountain roads have dangerous curves
  • Don't do Langbiang after 09:00 - clouds roll in by 11:00 and views disappear
  • Don't drink and drive/ride - mountain roads are unforgiving and police checkpoints exist
  • Don't plan during Tet - everything is booked, crowded, and expensive

Worth stopping for

  • Winery: Afternoon light (14:00-16:00) on the vineyard terrace. Shoot through your sparkling glass to capture bubbles + vineyard rows + Langbiang mountain.
  • Night market: Steam rising from hot pot + wine glass + market chaos behind. Best 19:00-21:00 when crowds peak.
  • Langbiang summit: Wide shot of cloud sea below you. Go at sunrise (07:00-08:00) before clouds rise. Wine bottle silhouette against orange sky is the money shot.
  • Dalat in general: Morning mist over Xuan Huong Lake (06:30-07:30). French colonial architecture catches beautiful afternoon light.
