Drinking and driving
Local palm wine (arak/tuak) is the drink here - especially at Wae Rebo village where it's part of the cultural experience. Wine nearly impossible to find. Bintang in Labuan Bajo only. Don't drink and drive Trans-Flores roads.

  • Ngurah Rai (DPS) Bali - 1.5 hour flight to LBJ
Without a car
Trans-Flores is NOT feasible without own transport. Options: (1) Hire car + driver (~600,000-800,000 IDR/day all-in), (2) Rent scooter (300,000-400,000 IDR/day) - ONLY if experienced rider, roads are challenging, (3) Public buses exist but infrequent, slow, and exhausting for 300+ km. Car + driver is best value for groups.

Why there
Labuan Bajo has best infrastructure (hotels, restaurants, dive shops). From there, Trans-Flores is a linear journey with overnight stops in Ruteng, Bajawa, or Ende. Wae Rebo village stay is essential midway.

Labuan Bajo: book 1 week ahead in peak (Jul-Aug). Trans-Flores road stops: walk-in OK (low tourist volume). Wae Rebo: MUST book 3-5 days ahead.

Padar sunrise: arrive 5:30am (means 3:30am boat departure). Kelimutu: 5:00am entry for sunrise at 5:45am. Trans-Flores driving: start early, finish by dark.

Trans-Flores car fits 4-6 comfortably - cost-effective for groups. Solo travelers: share rides via hostel boards or Flores backpacker Facebook groups.
Rainy season
December-March: Roads can wash out, landslides on Trans-Flores, Wae Rebo trek muddy/dangerous. April-November is dry season - travel then.

If you only have one day
Impossible. Minimum 3 days: Labuan Bajo (1) + Komodo/Padar tour (1) + either Trans-Flores start OR Wae Rebo (1). Skip Rinjani entirely unless adding 3+ days.
If it rains
Stay in Labuan Bajo - dive shops run even in rain (underwater doesn't care). Trans-Flores roads become dangerous in heavy rain. Wae Rebo trek is slippery/risky in rain.
Skip if time is short
  • Mount Rinjani - it's on a different island (Lombok) and requires 2-3 extra days
  • Ende city - gateway town with little tourist appeal, use for flights only
  • Spider Rice Fields near Ruteng - worth a stop if driving past, but not a destination

Mistakes to avoid

  • DON'T try Trans-Flores without own transport - public buses are unreliable torture
  • DON'T skip the 3:30am wake-up for Padar sunrise - midday is hot, crowded, and the light is harsh
  • DON'T underestimate the Wae Rebo trek - 3 hours each way, steep jungle trail, bring water and proper shoes
  • DON'T arrive at Wae Rebo without booking - they cap visitors and will turn you away
  • DON'T drive Trans-Flores after dark - no streetlights, cliff edges, livestock on roads
  • DON'T rent scooter unless experienced - these roads will punish beginners
  • DON'T expect Mount Rinjani as Flores - it's on Lombok, separate flights needed
  • DON'T rush the journey - Trans-Flores rewards slow exploration, not racing

Worth stopping for

  • Padar sunrise: Arrive summit by 5:15am. Shoot wide for 3 bays, then telephoto details of pink beach. Bring headlamp for climb.
  • Trans-Flores: Stop at Spider Rice Fields viewpoint near Ruteng for aerial pattern shot. Late afternoon light best.
  • Wae Rebo: Shoot cone houses at dawn before mist clears. Inside longhouse: low light challenge, bring fast lens or use phone night mode.
  • Komodo dragons: Get low angle for dramatic perspective. Don't get within 2 meters - rangers will stop you.
  • Labuan Bajo sunset: Puncak Waringin viewpoint or waterfront bars. Silhouette boat masts make great foreground.
