Nearest airport: Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) - Hanoi, 165 km from Halong Bay
Drinking and driving: On the cruise: drink freely - you're not going anywhere. On Cat Ba: motorbike is the only way around but roads are quiet after dark. Grab doesn't work here - use local xe oms (motorbike taxis) or walk Cat Ba Town's small central area.
Other airports: Van Don International Airport (VDO) - 50 km from Halong Bay, limited flights from HCMC and select Asian cities
Without a car: Cruise shuttle from Hanoi is included with booking (3.5-4 hours). Public bus from Hanoi's My Dinh station to Bai Chay (5 hours, 100,000 VND). Cat Ba Island: speedboat or slow ferry from Halong, or direct bus+ferry from Hanoi via Cat Hai (4.5 hours). On Cat Ba, rent a motorbike (100,000-150,000 VND/day) or use local xe oms.

Base yourself in: Cruise boat (nights 1-2), Cat Ba Town (night 3)
Why there: Sleep on the bay among the karsts - that's the whole point. Then extend to Cat Ba for the budget/backpacker Halong experience without the cruise price tag.
Booking tip: Book cruise 1-2 weeks ahead via official websites. Never book from Hanoi street touts - scam cruises are rampant. Cat Ba walk-in OK except holiday weekends.

Peak season: October-December is peak (cruise prices +30%). Vietnamese holidays (Tet late Jan/Feb, April 30, Sept 2) see massive domestic crowds - avoid or book 3 weeks ahead.

If you only have one day: Not possible - 2-night cruise minimum to experience Halong properly. If truly rushed, Cat Ba day cruise (7AM-5PM) from Hanoi includes kayaking and lunch.
If it rains: Cruises operate rain or shine. Caves provide shelter. Cat Ba: explore war tunnels at Hospital Cave or chill in Family Bakery with coffee and wifi.
Skip if time is short: Cat Ba extension (nice but not essential if you've done 2-night cruise)
Sung Sot Cave (crowded with tour groups, not worth the queues)

Don't book through Hanoi street touts - scam cruises are a major problem (bait-and-switch boats, overcrowding, hidden fees)
Don't book a 1-night cruise - it's rushed, you barely see anything, and you spend more time on the bus than the boat
Don't expect Halong Bay proper to be pristine - 500+ cruise boats daily create crowds. Lan Ha Bay (reached on 2-night cruises) is the real experience
Don't bring only swimwear - it gets cold on deck at night (15-20°C in winter months)
Don't miss the sunrise Tai Chi on deck - wine glass optional but encouraged
Don't drink duty-free booze on board - customs checked my bag once, and the crew will confiscate it (buy on-board instead, or BYOB discreetly)
Don't rely on ATMs in Cat Ba - bring cash from Hanoi (limited ATMs, sometimes empty)

Sunrise from the bow of the boat - wake at 5:30 AM, bring wine from last night. The karsts emerge from the morning mist.
Sunset on the top deck - position yourself at the northeast corner with the main karst formations to the west. Wine glass in frame, golden hour light.
Kayaking shots - waterproof phone pouch essential. Best shots are inside the lagoons when you paddle through karst arches.
Cannon Fort (Cat Ba) - the rusted cannon barrel makes perfect foreground for karst silhouettes at sunset. Arrive 30 mins before sunset to find your spot.
Night shot from the boat deck - long exposure of the lit fishing boats scattered among dark karst silhouettes. Tripod or prop phone on railing.
