Car required: No
Nearest airport: Luang Prabang International Airport (LPQ) - small, charming, 10 min to Old Town
Drinking and driving: Almost no wine culture. Beer Lao is king. Bring wine expectations DOWN - this is about experiencing Laos, not drinking wine. Icon Klub, Dyen Sabai, and L'Elephant have small wine selections. 23:00 curfew citywide - everything closes.
Other airports: Vientiane Wattay International Airport (VTE) - capital, more international connections
Fly Luang Prabang -> Vientiane (1 hr, $60-90) to connect stops 1-3 with 4-5
Without a car: Internal flights (Lao Skyway, Lao Airlines) connect Luang Prabang-Vientiane in 1 hr vs. 10-12 hr bus. Buses are cheap ($15-25) but brutal mountain roads. For culture trail, fly. Tuk-tuks and walking handle everything in-town. Rent bicycle ($2/day) in Luang Prabang for Old Town exploration.

Why there: Luang Prabang is the culture hub - UNESCO Old Town, night market, Utopia, elephant sanctuaries. Vientiane has COPE centre and That Luang festival. Split your base for maximum efficiency.
Booking tip: Luang Prabang: book 1 week ahead Nov-Feb (cool season). Vientiane: book 2-3 WEEKS ahead during That Luang festival (mid-Nov). Otherwise same-day walk-ins fine.
Nightly range: $8-100/night
Peak season: That Luang festival (November full moon) = Vientiane hotels 2x price and fully booked. Plan ahead or skip festival. Lao New Year (Songkran, mid-April) sees water fight chaos and higher prices.

Rainy season: May-October: Afternoon downpours daily (2-3 hours). Bring poncho. Temples still accessible. Utopia has covered areas. Elephant sanctuaries run rain or shine (muddier = more fun for elephants).

Spirit House (Vientiane) - best wine selection in Vientiane (which isn't saying much)
Street food: Luang Prabang night market vegetarian buffet - $2, surprisingly good, supports local vendors
Vientiane riverside night market - grilled everything, $1-3/skewer
Luang Prabang morning market (5-7 AM) - watch monks collect alms, then eat breakfast
Restaurants: Tamarind (Luang Prabang) - upscale Lao tasting menu, $15-25, book ahead
L'Elephant (Luang Prabang) - French-Lao fusion, best wine list in town (still limited)
Makphet (Vientiane) - social enterprise training restaurant, excellent food, supports youth

Ethical elephant sanctuary (MandaLao or Elephant Village) - book NO RIDING operations only
That Luang festival IF you're in Laos in November - plan entire trip around it
COPE centre - sobering, essential, 1 hour that will change your understanding of Laos
If you only have one day: If you only have 1 day, stay in Luang Prabang: Night market (17:30-19:00) -> Utopia sunset (16:30-23:00) -> late-night cushions and conversation. Skip Vientiane entirely.
If it rains: COPE centre is indoor. Temples have covered areas. Utopia has pavilions. Night market vendors have tarps. Luang Prabang Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre is excellent rainy-day culture.
Skip if time is short: Vientiane entirely (unless it's That Luang festival) - Luang Prabang is the heart
River cruises - nice but not essential for culture focus
Buddha Park (Vientiane) - quirky but skippable if time-pressed

Mistakes to avoid

Don't book elephant riding operations - only sanctuaries with NO RIDING policy (MandaLao, Elephant Village)
Don't expect wine culture - this is Beer Lao country. Bring expectations down.
Don't skip COPE centre because it's "heavy" - it's essential context for modern Laos

Don't disrespect the 23:00 curfew - everything closes, police enforce it
Don't wear revealing clothes to That Luang festival - shoulders/knees covered
