Insider tip. The secret to this trail: Fly Luang Prabang -> Phonsavan ($60-100, 40 min) to skip the brutal 12-hour mountain bus from Huay Xai. Do the trail in reverse if needed: Luang Prabang -> Phonsavan (fly) -> Plain of Jars -> Bus to Luang Prabang -> Nong Khiaw -> Muang Ngoi -> Back to LP -> THEN north to Gibbon Experience.

Drinking and driving: Bring wine to remote areas from Luang Prabang. Nong Khiaw has Beer Lao everywhere, wine at upscale guesthouses. Muang Ngoi = bring your own. Gibbon Experience = they provide Lao-Lao (rice whiskey).
Other airports: Phonsavan Airport (XKH) - domestic only, saves brutal bus ride
Oudomxay Airport (ODY) - closer to Gibbon Experience
Without a car: ⚠️ NO CAR NEEDED - roads are terrible and slow. Use buses, boats, and tuk-tuks. Consider flying Luang Prabang -> Phonsavan to skip 12-hour death bus.

Where to stay

Base yourself in: Luang Prabang (start/end) + move bases each stop
Why there: This trail requires multiple bases - you'll sleep in: Luang Prabang (Day 1), Gibbon treehouses (Days 2-3), Phonsavan (Day 4-5), Nong Khiaw (Day 6), Muang Ngoi (Day 7+). Pack light - you're moving constantly.
Booking tip: ⚠️ Gibbon Experience must be booked 2-3 months ahead online. Everything else is walk-in OK. November-February is peak season.

Best time of day: Plain of Jars: early morning (8-10 AM) before heat. Pak Ou Caves: 8 AM departure to beat tour groups. Nong Khiaw bridge: sunset (5:30-6 PM). Gibbon Experience: dawn for gibbon calls.
Group size: Gibbon Experience: max 8 people per treehouse site. Pak Ou boats: 6-10 people for shared. Buses: show up and go (always space).
Rainy season: ⚠️ May-October is monsoon. Roads become mudslides. Gibbon Experience closes in heavy rain. Plain of Jars is muddy misery. Visit November-March only.

If it rains: Phonsavan: UXO museum and COPE visitor center (powerful history). Luang Prabang: traditional arts center, cooking class. Nong Khiaw: not much - bring a book. Gibbon Experience: they cancel in heavy rain.
Skip if time is short: Pak Ou Caves if you're not a temple person - nice but not essential
Nong Khiaw if you're going to Muang Ngoi - similar scenery, Muang Ngoi is more unique
