Plan the trip

Getting there and around

Car required
No
Parking
No cars on Nusas - scooter or walk only. Park at viewpoints/beaches (5,000-10,000 IDR tip expected).
Nearest airport
Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), Bali
Drinking and driving
Bintang dominates. Some bars have wine by the glass (120,000-200,000 IDR) but don't expect quality. Stock up in Sanur if you must have wine. Cocktails better value than wine here.
Without a car
Fast boats from Sanur Beach to Nusa Penida/Lembongan (200,000-350,000 IDR one-way, 30-45 min). Rent scooters on islands (80,000-100,000 IDR/day) - essential for exploring. Inter-island boats run regularly between Penida, Lembongan, Ceningan. Yellow Bridge connects Lembongan-Ceningan (walk/scooter).

Where to stay

Base yourself in
Nusa Lembongan (best combo of chill + access)
Why there
Lembongan balances laid-back vibes with easy access to both Penida (day trip) and Ceningan (Yellow Bridge walk). Better restaurants and bars than Penida. Penida requires aggressive scootering - Lembongan is more relaxed.
Booking tip
High season (Jul-Aug, Dec-Jan): book 1-2 weeks ahead for good beachfront. Low season: walk-in works. Stay on Lembongan, day trip to Penida.
Nightly range
$15-150/night
Peak season
Peak: July-August (European summer), Christmas/New Year. Kelingking viewpoint becomes a zoo. May-June and September-October are sweet spots.

Recommended stays

Shoestring
Lembongan beach shacks: $15-25/night, fan, shared bath, hammock. Puri Nusa, Secret Garden. On Penida: Nyuh Taman ($20 basic bungalows).
Wanderer
Lembongan boutiques: $40-70/night, pool, AC, breakfast. Lembongan Beach Club, Indiana Kenanga. Penida: La Roja Bungalows ($45-60).
Flashpacker
Lembongan luxury: $100-200/night, private pool villas. Tigerlillys, Batu Karang. On Ceningan: The Ceningan Resort ($120+).

What it costs

Includes
Accommodation, scooter, meals, boat transfers, activities
Wine prices
Wine is overpriced and low quality on the islands. This is beer and cocktail territory. If you need wine, buy bottles in Sanur or Seminyak before crossing. Expect $8-15/bottle for basic imports.
Meals
Warung meals: 30,000-60,000 IDR ($2-4). Beach bar mains: 80,000-150,000 IDR ($5-10). Beer: 30,000-50,000 IDR. Budget $15-25/day food.
Per person
$50-100/day
Ways to spend less
  • Rent scooter for full stay (better daily rate) - walking is not viable
  • Cook rice and eggs at guesthouse if really budget - instant noodles everywhere
  • Eat at warungs, not beachfront bars - same food, 50% cheaper
  • Bring snorkeling mask from Bali - rentals are inflated
  • Fast boats from Sanur are 50% cheaper than resort boat transfers
Transport
Fast boat Sanur-Nusa: 200,000-350,000 IDR one-way. Scooter rental: 80,000-100,000 IDR/day. Inter-island boat: 20,000-50,000 IDR.

Booking and timing

Lead time
1-2 weeks for high season accommodation. Boats and activities walk-in OK.
Visas
Indonesia visa on arrival: free for 30 days for many nationalities (or 500,000 IDR for 60-day extendable). Check current rules.
Walk-ins accepted
Yes
Closed days
Manta ray snorkeling trips don't run in very rough seas (rare in dry season). Otherwise open daily.
Peak season
July-August and Christmas-New Year: Kelingking is overcrowded, accommodations book out. Go in shoulder season (May-June, Sept-Oct) for same weather, fewer crowds.
Best time of day
Kelingking: 06:30-07:30 (before crowds). Cliff jump: high tide (check locally). Sunset: west coast Lembongan 17:30.
Group size
Groups 4+: book villas in advance - bungalows are mostly couples/solo. Scooters accommodate 2 max.
Rainy season
November-March: Seas can be rough, boat crossings cancelled sometimes. Cliffs slippery and dangerous. April-October is best.

Where to eat

Wine bars
  • Lembongan: Sandy Bay has wine by the glass (not great, 120,000+ IDR)
  • Reality: Bring wine from Bali if you care. This is Bintang beach territory.
Street food
  • Lembongan: warungs along main road - nasi goreng, mie goreng, gado gado (30,000-50,000 IDR)
  • Penida: crystal bay warungs - fresh fish BBQ with rice (40,000-70,000 IDR)
  • Ceningan: cliff warung at Blue Lagoon jump spot - basic but perfect setting
Restaurants
  • Lembongan: Sandy Bay Beach Club - cushions, cocktails, sunset views, $8-15 mains
  • Lembongan: Ohana's - surf-shack vibes, wood-fired pizza, $6-10
  • Lembongan: Hai Bar & Grill - best bar scene on island, live music some nights
  • Ceningan: Secret Point Bar - cliff views, chill reggae vibes, $5-10 mains
  • Penida: Penida Colada - beachfront, decent food, tourist prices

If your time is short

Do not miss
  • Kelingking cliff T-Rex viewpoint - arrive before 07:30 or suffer the crowds
  • Blue Lagoon cliff jump on Ceningan - check tide and water depth first
  • Lembongan sunset from Sandy Bay or Ohana's with cold Bintang
If you only have one day
Impossible to do justice. Minimum 2 days: Penida (Kelingking) Day 1, Lembongan/Ceningan Day 2. Skip surf lesson if short.
If it rains
Rare in dry season. If rainy: stay on Lembongan (safer roads), find a bar with cover, play cards. Don't scooter Penida in rain - cliffs are deadly.
Skip if time is short
  • Surf lesson - save for Canggu or Uluwatu where waves are better
  • Manta ray snorkeling at Manta Point - requires early boat, not always guaranteed
  • Angel's Billabong on Penida - overhyped, often closed due to waves

Mistakes to avoid

  • DON'T descend to Kelingking Beach if you're not fit - the stairs are near-vertical, people get stuck
  • DON'T arrive at Kelingking after 09:00 - you'll wait 30+ min for a selfie spot
  • DON'T cliff jump at Blue Lagoon without checking water depth and swell - injuries happen
  • DON'T rent scooter if you can't ride - Penida roads are ROUGH, steep, and deadly for newbies
  • DON'T rely on ATMs on islands - bring cash from Bali (ATMs often empty or broken)
  • DON'T expect Penida to be chill like Lembongan - it's Instagram-tourists and aggressive scootering
  • DON'T book afternoon boat back to Bali on last day - seas get choppy, boats delayed/cancelled
  • DON'T forget reef-safe sunscreen - protect the manta rays you came to see

Worth stopping for

  • Kelingking: Arrive 06:30 for empty viewpoint. Shoot from both upper platform and left trail. Include human scale for cliff perspective.
  • Blue Lagoon cliff jump: Shoot from water level looking up at jumper. Or from bridge looking down at splash.
  • Yellow Bridge: Early morning for empty bridge shot connecting islands. Drone forbidden here.
  • Sunset Lembongan: Position at Sandy Bay or Ohana's by 17:00 for golden hour. Silhouette boats make great foreground.
  • Underwater: Bring waterproof housing for manta point - phone waterproof cases work for snorkeling depth.
