Dong Hoi Airport (VDH) - 45 km from Phong Nha, 1 hour drive
Drinking and driving
Motorbikes are the only way around - drink after your cave day is done. Pub With Cold Beer closes early enough to sleep it off. Police checkpoints exist on main roads.

  • Da Nang (DAD) - 280 km, 5 hours. Hanoi (HAN) - 500 km, 10 hours. Hue (HUI) - 200 km, 4 hours
Without a car
Vietnam Airlines/VietJet fly Hanoi-Dong Hoi (1 hour). Train: Reunification Express stops at Dong Hoi station (Hanoi 10-12 hours, Hue 3 hours). From Dong Hoi: share taxi or minibus to Phong Nha (80,000 VND, arranged by hostels). In town: rent motorbikes (100,000-150,000 VND/day) or bicycles (50,000 VND/day). Most caves require motorbike or tour transport.

Why there
There's only one real accommodation hub - the tiny village of Phong Nha/Son Trach. Everything is walkable. All cave tours depart from here. Hostels cluster along the main road with rice paddy views.

Easy Tiger fills up in peak season - book 3-5 days ahead. Farmstay popular with families - book 1 week ahead. Victory Road usually has availability.

September-November brings flooding. Caves close unpredictably - sometimes for weeks. Phong Nha Cave often floods first. Check conditions before traveling. Even dry caves can close if access roads flood.

If it rains
Caves are actually perfect in rain - they're dry inside. The problem is flooded access roads. If roads are open, cave away. If roads flood, Pub With Cold Beer has a covered area.
Skip if time is short
  • Dark Cave - fun but touristy, skip if you have limited time
  • Botanical Gardens - nice but not essential when caves are the draw

Mistakes to avoid

  • Don't assume you can book Son Doong last minute - it books out 6-12 months ahead
  • Don't visit September-November without checking flood conditions first
  • Don't skip the "7km Paradise Cave Adventure" if you want to see beyond the tourist boardwalk
  • Don't ride motorbikes drunk - police checkpoints exist and the roads have no street lights
  • Don't underestimate the heat - cave approaches are exposed, bring water and sun protection
  • Don't try to visit multiple distant caves on a bicycle - the distances are deceiving on maps
  • Don't book expedition tours through hostel middlemen - go direct to Oxalis for best info and same price
  • Don't miss the chance to motorbike the Western Ho Chi Minh Road through Bong Lai Valley - spectacular karst scenery

Worth stopping for

  • Paradise Cave: Bring a tripod or lean against railings - it's dark inside. Best shots 200m in where scale becomes apparent.
  • Son Doong/Hang En: Oxalis provides professional photos included in expedition price - your phone won't capture the scale
  • Pub With Cold Beer sunset: Position at the western-facing tables with rice paddies in frame. Golden hour is 17:00-17:45.
  • Phong Nha Cave boat: The dragon boats are photogenic - get shots entering the cave mouth from outside first
  • Karst scenery: Bong Lai Valley/Western Ho Chi Minh Road at golden hour. Stop at any bridge for reflections.
  • Dark Cave zipline: GoPro recommended - hands are occupied, and the 400m zipline is actually spectacular
