The Abbey Where It All Began
In 1098, a group of monks seeking a stricter life founded Cîteaux Abbey. Within 50 years, they'd established over 500 daughter abbeys across Europe and begun the most systematic study of terroir in human history. Today, monks still live here - and they still make cheese using medieval techniques.

Clos de Tart: 900 Years, 4 Owners
In 1141, Cistercian nuns founded this 7.5-hectare vineyard. It has never been divided. In 2017, François Pinault (who also owns Château Latour) became only the fourth owner in 900 years, paying a reported €230+ million. This is Burgundy's largest Grand Cru monopole - and one of the most exclusive tastings on Earth.

Walk the Walls of Clos de Vougeot
In 1098, Cistercian monks at Cîteaux Abbey began the world's first systematic wine research project. They weren't just making wine - they were documenting which 10-meter strip of hillside made better wine than the one next to it. By 1336, they had built a 50-hectare walled vineyard and established the template for every 'Grand Cru' classification that followed.

Decode the Monks' Legacy
Housed in a 14th-century former palace of the Dukes of Burgundy, this museum explains how monks invented the concept of 'climat' - the specific combination of soil, slope, and microclimate that makes each vineyard unique. This is where you learn to read Burgundy labels like a sommelier.
