Plan the trip

Getting there and around

Car required
No
Parking
Mount Batur parking: guides handle this. Nusa Penida: park scooter at Kelingking viewpoint lot (5,000 IDR). Ubud traffic is chaos - park at hotel and walk or scooter carefully.
Nearest airport
Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) - 13 km south of Denpasar, direct flights worldwide
Drinking and driving
You're BYOB-ing to both adventures - no driving after drinking. At Batur, guides drive you back. At Nusa Penida, drink wine AFTER scooter ride back to port area or at accommodation. Never drink and scooter - Bali police have checkpoints and fines are steep (1-2 million IDR + possible jail).
Other airports
  • Lombok International (LOP) - 100 km east if combining with Gili Islands
Without a car
Rent scooter in Ubud (60,000 IDR/day) for Mount Batur flexibility. For Nusa Penida: fast boat from Sanur Beach + scooter rental on island. Grab/Gojek work in Ubud/Seminyak but not rural areas. Batur tours include hotel pickup. Budget 150,000-200,000 IDR/day for Grab if not riding scooter.

Where to stay

Base yourself in
Ubud (central Bali, base for both adventures)
Why there
Ubud is equidistant to Mount Batur (1.5 hours) and Sanur port for Nusa Penida (45 min). Rice terraces, yoga, culture, and wine shops. Stay here to be central to adventure + recovery. Sanur works if you prefer beach, but adds 30 min to Batur.
Booking tip
Ubud books up 1-2 weeks ahead in high season (July-Aug, Dec-Jan). Sanur is easier walk-in except holidays. Book Batur pickup at same time as accommodation - hotels coordinate.
Nightly range
$8-250/night
Peak season
July-August and mid-December to mid-January are peak - prices double. Nyepi (Balinese New Year, March) shuts down the island for 24 hours - no flights, no driving, silence only. Book around it.

Recommended stays

Shoestring
Puri Garden Hotel & Hostel Ubud - $8-12/night dorm, pool, social, central. Or Sanur: Kitestar Lodge - $10/night dorm, steps to Nusa Penida boats.
Wanderer
Komaneka at Monkey Forest - $70-120/night, Ubud center, pool, breakfast. Or Sanur: Peneeda View Beach Hotel - $50-80/night, beachfront.
Flashpacker

  • Eat at warungs for breakfast/lunch (nasi goreng 30,000 IDR), save for nice dinners
  • BYOB wine to both adventures - buying on-site is impossible or expensive
  • Book Batur tour direct with guide association, not through hotel markup
  • Share scooter and boat costs if traveling with friend(s)
Transport

Booking and timing

Lead time
Mount Batur: 2-3 days minimum (popular). Nusa Penida boat: day before or morning-of (flexible). Accommodation: 1-2 weeks high season, walk-in OK low season.
Visas
Indonesia Visa on Arrival (VoA): $35 USD (500,000 IDR) at airport for 30 days, extendable to 60. Most nationalities eligible. Bring cash - card machines temperamental.
Walk-ins accepted
Yes
Closed days
Nyepi (Balinese New Year, March) - entire island shuts 24 hours, no exceptions. Check dates yearly. Everything else operates 7 days.
Peak season
July-August and Christmas/New Year: book everything 2-3 weeks ahead. Full moon Batur hikes book 2-4 weeks ahead. Nyepi (March) shuts island - plan around it.
Best time of day
Batur: 04:00 start for 05:45-06:15 sunrise. Nusa Penida: arrive Kelingking 15:00-16:00 for golden hour. Avoid midday heat at both.
Rainy season
November to March is wet season. Mornings usually clear - Batur hikes run year-round (rain rare at 4am). Nusa Penida boats may cancel in rough seas (Nov-Dec especially). Bring rain jacket - afternoon storms common. Trails muddy after rain.

Where to eat

Wine bars
  • Wine Connection Ubud (Monkey Forest Rd) - best selection, bottle shop + wine bar
  • Hujan Locale Ubud - Indonesian cuisine + curated wine list
  • Locavore Ubud - world-class wine pairings with tasting menu
  • Nusa Penida: BYOB essential - no wine infrastructure on island
Street food
  • Ubud night market (Pasar Senggol) - nasi campur, satay, babi guling, 25,000-50,000 IDR
  • Gianyar Night Market (15 min from Ubud) - legendary babi guling, 50,000 IDR
  • Warungs along Monkey Forest Rd - budget eats 30,000-60,000 IDR
  • Nusa Penida: limited - pack snacks or eat at port before departing
Restaurants
  • Clear Café Ubud - healthy organic, great post-Batur recovery, 80,000-120,000 IDR
  • Locavore Ubud - fine dining, tasting menu, world-class, 1,500,000+ IDR (splurge)
  • Warung Biah Biah Ubud - best nasi campur in town, 35,000 IDR, authentic
  • Room4Dessert Ubud - Will Goldfarb's dessert bar, mind-blowing, 600,000 IDR tasting
  • Nusa Penida: Penida Colada - beach club, average food, decent setting, 100,000-150,000 IDR

If your time is short

Do not miss
  • Mount Batur sunrise with wine toast - THE quintessential Bali adventure
  • Kelingking viewpoint at Nusa Penida - Instagram photo is mandatory
  • Post-adventure wine recovery dinner at Ubud wine spot
If you only have one day
Not realistic - Mount Batur is full-day commitment (midnight pickup, return 9am, then recovery). Minimum 3 days recommended.
If it rains
Ubud has indoor options: cooking classes (Casa Luna), Blanco Museum, pottery workshops. Karsa Spa for massage recovery. Wine Connection for afternoon tasting. Avoid Nusa Penida in heavy rain (boats cancel).
Skip if time is short
  • The hike DOWN Kelingking cliff (brutal, dangerous, most skip) - viewpoint is the real prize
  • Angel's Billabong if short on time - Kelingking alone is enough for Nusa Penida
  • Scooter around all of Nusa Penida - stick to Kelingking if only day-tripping

Mistakes to avoid

  • Don't skip layers for Batur - summit is 15°C, you hiked in heat and will freeze
  • Don't attempt Kelingking descent in flip-flops - it's near-vertical, people die
  • Don't rent scooter without checking brakes - Bali roads are dangerous, test first
  • Don't forget international driving license - police checkpoints fine unlicensed riders heavily
  • Don't trust Nusa Penida boat schedules rigidly - seas can be rough, delays happen
  • Don't pack wine in checked luggage for flight home - bottles break. Hand carry or ship.
  • Don't drink and scooter - Bali police are strict, fines are 1-2 million IDR + jail risk
  • Don't skip wine shops before adventures - there's nowhere to buy quality at Batur or Nusa Penida

Worth stopping for

  • Batur sunrise: Wide-angle capturing crater rim, volcanic steam, Mount Agung, and your wine toast (tripod helps). Golden hour 05:45-06:15.
  • Kelingking viewpoint: The classic T-Rex shot from the main platform. Arrive 15:00-16:00 for best light. Shoot from left side of viewpoint for most dramatic angle.
  • Batur selfie: Headlamp selfie during night hike, or summit group shot with sunrise behind you
  • Nusa Penida panorama: Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong if you have time - dramatic natural arches
  • Ubud rice terraces: Tegalalang rice terraces 20 min north of Ubud - iconic stepped paddies, best morning light
  • Wine moment: Your BYOB wine with volcanic steam (Batur) or cliff edge (Nusa Penida) - the earned-wine shot
