Why there
Central hub with best boat connections, most dining/nightlife, easiest wine sourcing. Day trip to Gili Meno, return to Gili T for sunset drinks and social scene. Gili Air is quieter middle ground.
Booking tip
July-August and Christmas-New Year are PACKED - book 2+ months ahead. April-June and September-October are sweet spots: good weather, fewer crowds, better walk-in deals.

If it rains
Gili T has no museums/indoor activities. Embrace it: yoga class at Gili Yoga (150,000 IDR), coffee shop hopping, wine tasting at Jali Resort, cooking class at your hostel, or take the boat to Lombok.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Bringing a suitcase with wheels - sandy paths destroy them. Use backpacks or duffel bags.
  • Not bringing cash - ATMs are unreliable and charge 50,000-70,000 IDR fees. Bring IDR from Bali/Lombok.
  • Buying wine on Gili Meno - there are no shops. Stock up on Gili T before the boat.
  • Renting a bike after 10:00 - they run out during peak season. Secure yours at 08:00.
  • Missing the last boat between islands (16:00-17:00 depending on season) - you're stranded overnight.
  • Drinking tap water - stomach issues are common. Hostels provide filtered water.
  • Booking accommodation on the wrong island - Gili Air is quieter than expected, Gili Meno has zero nightlife.
  • Not wearing reef-safe sunscreen - fines are enforced at snorkel sites, and it kills coral.

Worth stopping for

  • Ocean swings at sunset: Shoot from beach with swing silhouette against orange sky, or from swing with wine glass in foreground. Golden hour 17:30-18:15, sun sets over Mt. Agung.
  • Underwater turtle portrait: GoPro or waterproof phone, get low and shoot upward as turtle surfaces. Don't chase turtles - float still and they'll approach.
  • Bike + wine picnic setup: Bicycle propped in sand, wine bottle on sarong, ocean backdrop. Gili Meno northeast coast.
  • Night market chaos: Overhead shot of grilled seafood display, smoke and flames. Peak activity 19:00-20:00.
  • Star trail over beach: Gili Meno east coast (zero light pollution), long exposure 15-30sec after 22:00.
