Nearest airport: Luang Prabang International Airport (LPQ) - 10 min from town
Drinking and driving: This is BeerLao country, not wine country. No drinking strategy needed - you'll be sipping beer, not doing tastings.
Other airports: Vientiane (VTE) - 7-10 hour bus north
Without a car: Bicycle rental ($1-2/day), tuk-tuks everywhere ($1-3), motorbike rental ($10-15/day). Old town is walkable. For Kuang Si Falls, take shared minibus from guesthouses.

Why there: UNESCO World Heritage old town is where everything happens. Stay within walking distance of Sakkaline Road for alms giving. Night market, riverside, temples all walkable.
Booking tip: Book 1-2 weeks ahead for November-February (peak season). Walk-ins possible in shoulder season but best places fill up.

Restaurants: Tamarind ($8-15/person) - Lao cooking class + restaurant, best upscale Lao food
Coconut Garden ($6-10) - riverside, excellent Lao curries and bamboo shoot soup
Dyen Sabai ($5-8) - stunning riverside deck, sunset beers, wood-fired pizza
Joma Bakery Cafe ($3-6) - Western breakfast, excellent coffee, air-con refuge

Rent a bicycle and get lost in temple-filled streets
If you only have one day: Wake up for alms giving (5:30 AM), breakfast at Joma, rent bicycle, explore temples (Wat Xieng Thong), lunch at night market area, afternoon trip to Kuang Si Falls, sunset cruise on Mekong, dinner at night market.
If it rains: Wander the covered temples (Wat Xieng Thong, Wat Mai), Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre (excellent museum, $5), long lunch at Tamarind, afternoon at Utopia Bar reading, massage ($6-10/hour).
Skip if time is short: Bowling alley - fun but not essential if short on time
Pak Ou Caves - 2-hour boat trip, interesting but not mind-blowing
Multiple sunset cruises - one is enough

DON'T disrespect alms giving - if you don't follow etiquette perfectly, just watch from a distance
DON'T buy sticky rice from your guesthouse for alms giving - buy from street vendors (cheaper, supports locals)
DON'T expect a party scene - Luang Prabang has an 11 PM "curfew" (everything closes)
DON'T drink wine here - embrace BeerLao. Imported wine is marked up 300%.
DON'T skip Kuang Si Falls to "avoid tourists" - it's touristy because it's stunning. Just go early.

Kuang Si Falls: Main cascade from the viewing platform. Arrive by 9 AM for best light and turquoise water before crowds.
Alms giving: NO close-up photos. If you must, shoot from distance with long lens. Respect > Instagram.
Wat Xieng Thong: Golden temple walls at sunset (west-facing). The "tree of life" mosaic on the back wall is the highlight.
Mekong sunset cruise: Silhouette shots of mountains and fishing boats. Golden hour around 5:45 PM November-February.
