Parking: Motorbike parking is free at all lagoons and tubing operators. Lock your bike - theft is rare but happens.
Nearest airport: Wattay International Airport (VTE) in Vientiane - 3 hours south
Drinking and driving: Beer Lao and Beer Lao Dark are the drinks here. Wine available at upscale spots (Amigo's, Viva Riverside) but minimal selection. For balloon champagne, it's included.
Other airports: Luang Prabang International Airport (LPQ) - 4 hours north, better for northern loop
Without a car: Minivans from Vientiane (4-5 hours, ~100,000 LAK) or Luang Prabang (4 hours, ~120,000 LAK). Once in Vang Vieng, rent motorbike (50,000 LAK/day) or hire tuk-tuk for lagoons (~200,000 LAK full day).

Base yourself in: Vang Vieng town center
Why there: Everything walkable - hostels, tubing operators, restaurants, motorbike rental. The river is a 10-minute walk for sunset views.
Booking tip: November-February is peak season - book 2-3 weeks ahead. Hostels fill fast during holidays. Walk-ins work in rainy season (May-Sep).

Peak season: November-February is dry season and peak travel. Prices spike, hostels fill, balloon rides book out. Book everything in advance.

Shoestring: Vang Vieng Backpackers Hostel - $6 dorms, social vibe, rooftop bar, river views. Spicy Laos Backpackers is similar. Book ahead in high season.
Wanderer: Riverside Boutique Resort - $35-50, pool, riverside, quieter. Vang Vieng Eco Lodge for jungle vibes.
Flashpacker: Amari Vang Vieng - $70-100, luxury resort, pool, spa. Best in town for comfort after adventure days.

Wine prices: Wine selection is LIMITED. BeerLao and BeerLao Dark dominate. Amigo's and Viva Riverside have basic wine by the glass (80,000-120,000 LAK). Pack wine from Vientiane or Luang Prabang if serious about it.
Meals: Street food: $2-4. Backpacker restaurants: $5-8. Amigo's pizza/pasta: $8-12.

Peak season: November-February: balloon books out, hostels full, lagoons crowded. Book balloon ASAP. October and March are sweet spots - fewer crowds, good weather.
Rainy season: May-October: Balloon cancellations common, tubing dangerous (river swells), lagoons muddy. Not recommended. Roads to lagoons can wash out.

Viva Riverside - Sunset views, Lao-Western fusion, wine selection. ~100,000-200,000 LAK/dish.
Gary's Irish Bar - Western comfort food, burgers, Guinness. Post-tubing carb loading.
Nazim Restaurant - Indian cuisine, vegetarian-friendly. ~60,000-100,000 LAK/dish.

If you only have one day: Hot air balloon at sunrise (if booked ahead). Otherwise, motorbike Blue Lagoon 1 and 3, then tubing in afternoon.
If it rains: Explore caves (Tham Chang has views, Tham Phu Kham has reclining Buddha). Wine at Amigo's. The COPE visitor center branch in town explains UXO history.
Skip if time is short: Blue Lagoon 2 and 4 - similar to 1 and 3, not essential
Tham Phu Kham cave - interesting but not unique

Don't tube alone - go with a group of travelers for safety and fun
Don't expect wild tubing parties - the 2012 crackdown ended the dangerous days
Don't ride motorbikes drunk - police checkpoints are common and fines are real
Don't book balloon for your last day - weather cancellations mean you need buffer days
Don't skip Blue Lagoon 3 for Lagoon 1 only - 3 is quieter and just as beautiful
Don't return tubing late - you lose your 50,000 LAK deposit if after 18:00
Don't bring valuables in the tubing bag - waterproofing is questionable
Don't expect European wine - this is Beer Lao territory, embrace it
