Getting there and around

Car required
No
Nearest airport
Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) - main international hub, 30 km from city
Drinking and driving
Use Grab exclusively after drinking. Never drink and scooter - it's dangerous and illegal. Taxis at 2 AM can be sketchy - use Grab or walk in groups.
Other airports
  • Don Mueang (DMK) - budget airlines (AirAsia, Nok Air, Lion Air)
Without a car
BTS Skytrain + MRT subway cover most areas. Grab app for everything else. Airport Rail Link from BKK to city (45 min, 45 THB). Avoid tuk-tuks that approach you - they run gem/tailor scams.

Where to stay

Base yourself in
Khao San Road area (Banglamphu)
Why there
Central to backpacker nightlife, cheap eats 24/7, easy Grab access. Stay here for the chaos, escape to Silom/Sukhumvit for polish.
Booking tip
Khao San hostels walk-in OK except Full Moon weekends. Lebua: book 1 week ahead for river-view rooms.
Nightly range
$8-200/night
Peak season
Full Moon Party weekends and Songkran (mid-April) see 2-3x prices. Book 2 weeks ahead.

Recommended stays

Shoestring
NapPark Hostel @ Khao San - $8/night dorm, rooftop bar, legendary social scene
Wanderer
Ibis Styles Bangkok Khaosan Viengtai - $45/night, pool, breakfast, clean rooms
Flashpacker
Lebua State Tower - $180/night, THE Hangover hotel, stay where you drink

What it costs

Includes
Hostel/hotel, transport, food, 2-3 drinks, one nice experience
Wine prices
Wine is expensive in Thailand. Sky Bar wines: $15-40/glass. 7-Eleven wine: $8-15/bottle (surprisingly drinkable). Wine Connection stores have best retail selection.
Meals
Street food: $1-3. Khao San restaurants: $5-10. Sky Bar snacks: $15-30. Fine dining: $50+
Per person
$50-150/day
Ways to spend less
  • Pre-drink with 7-Eleven wine before rooftop bars - Monsoon Valley Thai wine is actually good
  • Happy hour at Lebua is 16:00-18:00 (still expensive but 30% off)
  • Street food pad thai is better AND cheaper than restaurant version
  • Chatuchak has wine vendors - haggle for bulk deals
Transport
BTS/MRT: $0.50-2/trip. Grab: $3-8 across town. Airport taxi: $12-15 metered.

Booking and timing

Lead time
Same day for most. 2-3 days for weekend Lebua sunset.
Visas
30-day visa-free for most nationalities. Easy extensions at immigration offices.
Walk-ins accepted
Yes
Peak season
Songkran (Thai New Year, April 13-15) = water fight chaos, everything 2x price. Full Moon Party weekends see spillover crowds in Bangkok.
Rainy season
May-October has afternoon storms. Rooftops still work - storms pass in 1-2 hours. Bring umbrella.

Where to eat

Wine bars
  • Wine Connection (multiple locations) - best Thai wine selection
  • Gazebo Wine Garden Rambuttri - actual wine on Khao San
  • Lebua Mezzaluna - serious wine-paired tasting menu
Street food
  • Pad Thai Thip Samai (Phra Nakhon) - legendary, worth the queue
  • Khao San food stalls after midnight - drunk food perfection
Restaurants
  • Sirocco at Lebua - dress up, splurge, 360° views
  • Raan Jay Fai - street food with Michelin star (book 1 month ahead)

If your time is short

Do not miss
  • Lebua Sky Bar at golden hour - arrive 17:30 for railing spot
  • Khao San Road after 22:00 - the full backpacker chaos experience
If you only have one day
Sky Bar sunset (17:30-19:00) -> Khao San Road (21:00-midnight) -> street food nightcap
If it rains
Bangkok malls have rooftop bars too. Try Above Eleven at Fraser Suites or Wine Connection in Siam Paragon.
Skip if time is short
  • Chatuchak Market (unless it's a weekend)
  • River cruise (nice but not essential for nightlife focus)

Mistakes to avoid

  • Don't wear flip flops/shorts/sleeveless to Sky Bar - you will be turned away
  • Don't take tuk-tuks that approach you - they run gem/tailor scams
  • Don't drink bucket cocktails on an empty stomach - they're lethal
  • Don't try to see all of Bangkok in one night - pick a zone and own it
  • Don't forget sunscreen even at night - rooftop reflection is real

Worth stopping for

  • Sky Bar: Northeast corner of outdoor terrace, dome bar on left, river on right. Arrive 17:30.
  • Khao San Road sign: Bribe a tuk-tuk driver 50 THB to watch your stuff while you pose
  • Golden hour from Lebua is 17:45-18:15 - position matters more than timing
  • Khao San chaos shots work best with wide angle around 23:00
