Nearest airport: Sultan Hasanuddin Airport Makassar (UPG) - main hub for eastern Indonesia. Connections to Toraja (TRJ), Manado (MDC), Ambon (AMQ), Wakatobi (WNI).
Drinking and driving: Toraja: drink palm wine (tuak) with locals at ceremonies - builds trust. Manado: beer culture, limited wine. Banda/Wakatobi: bring wine from Bali or Makassar - NOTHING available remotely. No drinking and diving (24-hour rule strictly enforced).
Other airports: Bali (DPS) has direct flights to Makassar and Manado - often cheaper to route through Bali
Jakarta (CGK) connects to all eastern Indonesia destinations but adds travel time
Without a car: This trail requires flights between regions - no overland option Toraja->Manado->Banda->Wakatobi. In each location: Toraja needs scooter or guide with car. Manado/Bunaken uses boats. Banda is walkable. Wakatobi uses boats. Budget 5-8M IDR (~$350-550) for internal flights total.

Base yourself in: Mobile trail: Rantepao (Toraja) -> Manado -> Banda Neira -> Tomia (Wakatobi)
Why there: Each region is isolated - must hop between bases. Rantepao is Toraja's traveler hub. Manado has airport access for Bunaken. Banda Neira is the only real town in Banda.
Booking tip: Toraja: walk-in OK except July-Sept (book 3-5 days ahead). Bunaken island stays: book 3-5 days ahead. Banda: book 1 week ahead (limited rooms). Wakatobi Dive Resort books 2-6 months ahead.

Bunaken: underwater housing or GoPro essential. Lekuan Wall with diver silhouette is iconic. Turtles are cooperative models.
Banda: Fort Belgica at sunrise with Gunung Api volcano smoking in background. Nutmeg drying in village streets (ask permission).
