Motorbike parking is free at Lake Toba guesthouses. Lock your bike - theft is rare but happens.
Nearest airport
Kualanamu International Airport (KNO), Medan - 39km from city center. Most international connections via Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur.
Drinking and driving
Forget wine - this is beer territory. Indonesia has high alcohol taxes and wine costs $20+ per bottle. Bintang beer is religion here (12,000-15,000 IDR per bottle). Palm wine (tuak) at ceremonies builds local trust. If desperate for wine, buy duty-free at Medan airport on arrival.

Without a car
Tourist minibuses between Medan-Lake Toba-Bukit Lawang (50,000-100,000 IDR per leg, bookable through guesthouses). Local transport: motorbike rental at Lake Toba (80,000 IDR/day), walk everywhere in Bukit Lawang, klotok boat IS the transport in Tanjung Puting. Flights for Tanjung Puting leg essential.

Each stop is 3-5 hours apart - you must move bases. Lake Toba is decompression, Bukit Lawang is jungle immersion, Tanjung Puting requires overnight boat stays.

High season (July-Aug): book Lake Toba sunset bungalows 3-5 days ahead or arrive before 14:00 for walk-ins. Bukit Lawang has endless guesthouses - walk the strip with your pack.

  • Motorbike rental at Lake Toba is 80,000 IDR/day (~$5) - worth it to explore beyond Tuk Tuk.
  • Orangutan trek pricing: 1-day $20-25, 2D/1N $35-50 per person (includes guide, permits, jungle camp, meals). Book on arrival to compare.

October-March is rainy season. Jungle trails become mudslides, river levels rise making boat access dangerous, fewer orangutan sightings (they stay high in canopy).

  • Reality Check: There are NO wine spots in Lake Toba or Bukit Lawang. Tanjung Puting is a jungle boat. Embrace beer and river water.

  • Soto Medan (turmeric coconut soup with noodles) - 15,000-25,000 IDR, breakfast staple at Lake Toba warungs
  • Nasi Padang (Sumatran curry buffet) - point at dishes, pay by plate, 25,000-40,000 IDR

If you only have one day
Impossible. Minimum 5 days: Lake Toba (2) + Bukit Lawang (2) + travel. Skip Tanjung Puting if under 7 days.
If it rains
Lake Toba: visit museums and caves, massage at guesthouse. Bukit Lawang: riverside restaurants, card games. Tanjung Puting: boat trips continue rain or shine.
Skip if time is short
  • Berastagi (highland town) - nice for volcano hikes but adds 2 days
  • Medan city sightseeing - just a transit hub, move on quickly
  • 1-day orangutan trek - you see orangutans but miss the jungle camp magic

Mistakes to avoid

  • Don't book orangutan treks online before arriving - you'll pay 2x the local price. Book in Bukit Lawang after asking other travelers.
  • Don't stay in Medan longer than necessary - it's congested and has zero charm. Transit point only.
  • Don't skip the jungle camp on orangutan treks - the 1-day trek is fine but sleeping in the jungle is the legendary part.
  • Don't bring wine - this is beer and river water territory. Embrace Bintang culture.
  • Don't rent a motorbike at Lake Toba if you can't ride - steep hills and aggressive minibuses. Deaths happen.
  • Don't book the cheapest klotok boat - you'll be miserable. Spend $150+ for decent cabin and western toilet.
  • Don't expect wifi or phone signal in the jungle or on the boat - download maps offline.
  • Don't visit during rainy season (October-March) - jungle trails become mudslides and you'll see fewer orangutans.

Worth stopping for

  • Orangutan shots: Bring a zoom lens (phone cameras struggle). Best light is morning (9-11am when orangutans come to feeding platforms). Shoot from below looking up.
  • Lake Toba sunset: Shoot from Bagus Bay or any west-facing pier. Golden hour is 17:30-18:15. Frame mountains across the lake with traditional Batak boats.
  • Klotok boat: Morning mist on the river (6-7am) is magical - shoot from the bow as sun burns through fog.
  • Jungle camp: Shoot your guide cooking over fire, hammock setup under rainforest canopy, river bathing. These are the storytelling moments.
  • Thomas leaf monkey babies: In Bukit Lawang, the babies are BRIGHT ORANGE (adults are gray). Beautiful contrast against green jungle.
