    Lesbos-Turkey View Point

From the Turkish coast near Ayvalık, Lesbos is clearly visible across the strait - just 10km away. This proximity shows how Ionian Greek culture flowed between island and mainland. Theophrastus could see the coast where his terroir concepts applied.

    Ayvalık Old Town

This beautiful coastal town was majority Greek until 1923. Stone houses, olive presses, and churches (now mosques) preserve Aegean Greek character. Wine bars and meyhanes (taverns) serve Aegean wines with seafood. The atmosphere is more Greek than Turkish.

    Assos Ancient City

Aristotle founded a school here before being invited to tutor Alexander. The Temple of Athena overlooks Lesbos across the strait. The dramatic setting - acropolis above a small harbor - preserves Greek colonial atmosphere. Theophrastus likely visited his teacher here.

    Bozcaada Island Wines

This Aegean island (ancient Tenedos) has produced wine since Greek times. Today's producers make serious wines from Vasilaki (unique to the island) and international varieties. The Greek windmills and architecture show continuous Aegean culture. Ferry from the mainland takes 30 minutes.
