    Theater of Dionysus

    The birthplace of drama. This theater on the Acropolis south slope hosted the first tragedies (534 BC) and comedies as part of the City Dionysia festival. 17,000 spectators watched plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides - performances that were acts of worship to Dionysus. The priest of Dionysus had the central throne-seat.

    Sanctuary of Dionysus Eleuthereus

    Adjacent to the theater, this sanctuary was the religious heart of the City Dionysia. Processions brought the statue of Dionysus here, and sacrifices (including wine libations) preceded theatrical performances. The remains of the temple and altar show where Athenians worshipped the wine god for centuries.

    Odeon of Herodes Atticus

    The Roman-era theater still hosts performances during the Athens Festival (June-August). Though younger than the Theater of Dionysus, it maintains the tradition of theatrical performance on the Acropolis slopes.     This octagonal marble tower in the Roman Agora was a water clock, sundial, and weather vane.
