The volcanic island with the most dramatic wine views on earth. The caldera collapsed 3,600 years ago, destroying Minoan civilization. The vines survived and are trained in basket shapes (kouloura) to protect from wind.

Caldera-view tastings of Assyrtiko and Vinsanto. Santo Wines is the cooperative with best views; Venetsanos is a 1947 winery restored into a stunning venue. Both offer sunset sessions.

Akrotiri Archaeological Site
"Minoan Pompeii" — a Bronze Age city preserved by volcanic ash. Wine vessels and frescoes show a sophisticated wine culture 3,600 years ago. The museum has wine-related artifacts.

Traditional Santorini Wineries
Beyond the sunset spots, explore traditional producers. Kouloura basket-trained vines, volcanic cellars, and family operations making wine as their ancestors did. Sigalas, Gavalas, Hatzidakis are essential.

Crete: Knossos Palace
The Minoan palace where wine culture began in Europe. Giant pithos (clay vessels) stored wine 4,000 years ago. The reconstructions are controversial but evocative. Museum has original wine equipment.

Indigenous varieties revived: Vidiano, Vilana, Kotsifali, Mandilari. Cretan wine is having a renaissance after millennia of obscurity. Boutique producers are making excellent wines from ancient grapes.

Mountain wines with Roman road history. Archanes village is charming, and the surrounding vineyards produce excellent reds from Kotsifali and Mandilari. This was a Minoan center.
