If renting motorbike: park at Blue Lagoons for 5,000 LAK. Guesthouses have free bike parking. Lock bikes - petty theft happens.
Nearest airport
Wattay International Airport (VTE) in Vientiane - 160 km south, 3-4 hours
Drinking and driving
River tubing = expect to drink Beer Lao, not wine. Save wine for sunset at Amigo's or Viva Riverside after activities. Don't drink and motorbike - it's dangerous on these roads.
Other airports
  • Luang Prabang International (LPQ) - 220 km north, 5-6 hours
  • Both airports connect via Bangkok, Hanoi, or Singapore
Without a car
Minibus from Vientiane (3.5 hours, $8-12). VIP bus from Luang Prabang (5 hours, $10-15). Book through hostel or at bus stations. Songthaew pickup trucks within town (10,000 LAK). Rent motorbike for Blue Lagoon day ($8-12/day). Tuk-tuks for river tubing drop-off.

Everything is walkable from center. Restaurants, climbing shops, tube rentals, and river bars all clustered. Motorbike rental shops everywhere.
Booking tip
Walk-ins work except holidays (Lao New Year in April, Christmas/NY). Book balloon-confirmed nights to avoid moving hostels mid-trip.

November-February is peak cool season - book 1 week ahead. Prices stay fairly stable. Tubing high season is Dec-Jan when Western backpackers flood in.

Peak season
Cool season (Nov-Feb) has best weather but more crowds. Shoulder season (Oct, Mar-Apr) offers solitude with slightly less reliable balloon weather.
Best time of day
Balloon: sunrise (5:30 AM pickup). Climbing: 7 AM start to finish before afternoon heat. Tubing: start by 1 PM. Blue Lagoons: 9 AM-4 PM for best light.
Rainy season
May-September is wet season. Tubing is wilder (dangerous?), climbing is sketchy when wet, lagoons are muddier. Many guesthouses close. Not recommended.

Do not miss
  • Hot air balloon - the most spectacular view of the karsts, worth the cost
  • Rock climbing - world-class karst routes, beginner-friendly with good operators
  • Blue Lagoon hopping by motorbike - freedom to explore multiple lagoons
If you only have one day
Hot air balloon sunrise -> Blue Lagoon 1 for rope swings -> sunset wine at Amigo's. This captures the karst beauty from air and ground.
If it rains
Cave kayaking at Tham Nam (water cave) - operators run this rain or shine. Green Discovery offers half-day trips ($25-30). Also: cooking classes, massage, or hunker down at Sakura Bar.
Skip if time is short
  • River tubing if you only have 2-3 days - it's fun but not unique to Vang Vieng
  • Blue Lagoon 4 (furthest, roughest road, least impressive)

Mistakes to avoid

  • Don't skip the balloon because of cost - it's the experience of a lifetime
  • Don't rent motorbike without checking brakes and horn - test ride first
  • Don't tube alone - groups are safer and more fun
  • Don't expect Luang Prabang wine quality - Vang Vieng is Beer Lao territory
  • Don't climb without booking operator - bolted routes require guide/gear knowledge
  • Don't pack only flip-flops - you need real shoes for climbing/hiking
  • Don't dismiss Vang Vieng as just a party town - the adventure side is world-class

Worth stopping for

  • Balloon: Shoot other balloons with karsts below during flight. GoPro for basket selfies.
  • Climbing: Mid-route shots looking down at the valley. Partner belaying with karsts behind.
  • Blue Lagoon: Rope swing mid-air with turquoise water below. Arrive 9-10 AM for best light.
