Car required: No
Parking: No cars on Don Det/Don Khon - bicycle and foot traffic only. Blissfully quiet.
Nearest airport: Wattay International Airport (VTE) in Vientiane - small but functional
Drinking and driving: Everywhere is walking/biking distance. No driving = drink freely. Just don't fall in the Mekong.
Other airports: Pakse Airport (PKZ) - closer to 4000 Islands if flying in from Bangkok/Siem Reap, then 2 hour bus to islands
Without a car: Vientiane: walk, rent bicycle ($2/day), or tuk-tuk ($1-2). Vientiane->4000 Islands: VIP sleeper bus (10-12 hrs, $15-25) or minivan (faster but cramped). On islands: rent bicycle ($1-2/day) or walk - the islands are tiny.

Base yourself in: Vientiane (Day 1-2), Don Det or Don Khon (Day 3-5)
Why there: Vientiane for the "capital" experience and logistics. 4000 Islands for the hammock life. Don Det is social/party, Don Khon is quieter/couples.
Booking tip: Vientiane: book 2-3 days ahead for mid-range+. Islands: just show up - there are hundreds of bungalows. Peak season (Dec-Jan) might require arriving by noon to get best river views.

Restaurants: Vientiane: Makphet Restaurant - social enterprise training deaf staff, excellent Lao fusion
Vientiane: Kualao Restaurant - upscale Lao cuisine in traditional house
Vientiane: Spirit House - where you'll end up for wine anyway, they have food
Don Det: Sunset Bar (Don Det west side) - everyone goes here at sunset, food is meh but the vibe is perfect

Do not miss: Sunset on the Mekong in Vientiane watching Thailand across the water
Rent a bicycle on Don Det and loop the islands via the French bridge
Hammock time - doing absolutely nothing is the point
If you only have one day: If only one day in Vientiane: morning at Pha That Luang (the golden stupa), afternoon riverside walk, sunset at Spirit House. Skip the islands if less than 3 days - the travel time isn't worth it.
If it rains: Perfect excuse to do nothing. Hammock, book, beer. Vientiane has COPE Visitor Centre (free museum about unexploded ordnance in Laos - sobering and important).
Skip if time is short: Irrawaddy dolphin watching - rare sightings, underwhelming
Kayaking on islands - the current is strong and there's not much to see
Buddha Park (outside Vientiane) - quirky but 45 min away

Don't rush the islands - travelers plan 2 days and stay 5. Just accept it
Don't bring valuables - Don Det bungalows have minimal security, trust culture
Don't expect wine culture - this is BeerLao territory, embrace it
Don't book the VIP bus at tourist agencies - go directly to station to avoid markup
Don't skip Vientiane entirely - it's genuinely charming in its sleepiness
Don't rent a motorbike on islands unless experienced - sandy tracks + river edges = accidents
