Allegrini
Why go
One vineyard here makes a wine that had to leave its own appellation to exist. La Poja is a three-hectare limestone plateau above the hill of La Grola, planted only with Corvina in 1979. The consortium sets Corvina at 45 to 95 per cent of a Valpolicella blend, so a wine made from nothing else is sold as Corvina Veronese IGT.
What to expect
Two separate companies sell visits under the Allegrini name in Fumane. The winery's own hospitality page sells guided tastings and vineyard and winery visits, arranged through a booking widget or by writing to ospitalita@allegriniwines.com; it publishes no price and no timetable. Villa della Torre, the Renaissance house in the same commune, publishes both: tours at 10:30 and 15:00, tastings from EUR 40.
When to go
Time a visit to the drying loft rather than the vineyard. Allegrini picks its Amarone bunches in late September and La Poja at the beginning of October, then dries the Amarone fruit three to four months and the Recioto selection about five, so the fruttaio is loaded from October through the winter. Book ahead: Villa della Torre takes Saturday tours by prior arrangement only and runs every experience to a two-person minimum.
Practical details
Write to ospitalita@allegriniwines.com to arrange a tasting, guided tour or private event at the winery, Via Giare 5, 37022 Fumane, telephone +39 045 6832011. The winery publishes no price, duration or opening time for that visit. Villa della Torre in the same commune publishes its terms: a guided villa tour at EUR 20 per person, tastings at EUR 40 wine-only or EUR 60 with cold cuts and cheeses, minimum two participants, the tour included in the tasting price (July 2026).
Getting there
The winery stands at Via Giare 5 in Fumane, one of the five communes of Valpolicella Classica along with Sant'Ambrogio, San Pietro in Cariano, Marano and Negrar, north-west of Verona. The estate publishes coordinates for its vineyards rather than its gate: La Poja sits at N 45 31 50, E 10 49 48, in the neighbouring commune of Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella.
About Allegrini
Allegrini is a family wine estate at Fumane, one of the five municipalities of Valpolicella Classica north-west of Verona in Veneto. Its holdings run to around 150 hectares across eight named vineyards, from Monte dei Galli at 150 metres to Marezzane at 550. Four cousins run it, Francesco, Giovanni, Matteo and Silvia, described by the group as the seventh generation.
History
The family's antiquity is stated three different ways by the family itself. Allegrini Wines, the parent company, says 1854. The winery's own site says the sixteenth century. Famiglie Storiche, the Valpolicella association Allegrini belongs to, says the fourteenth. The same group site calls the four cousins now in charge the seventh generation, which fits the youngest of the three figures.
Terroir
The ground across Valpolicella Classica is mainly calcareous, dated by scholars to the Jurassic and Cretaceous. Allegrini's eight vineyards sample it at different heights: Monte dei Galli at San Pietro in Cariano at 150 metres, La Grola and La Poja at Sant'Ambrogio at 310 and 320, Villa Cavarena at Mazzurega at 530, Marezzane at 550 inside the Valpolicella nature reserve.
What insiders know
Marezzane was a mine. Allegrini planted its 10 hectares between 2016 and 2017 on a reclaimed industrial extraction site inside the Parco Naturalistico della Valpolicella, at 550 metres in the woods between Fumane and Marano. Most of its fruit is harvested in crates, the selection kept for drying and for Amarone.
Common questions
Can I visit Allegrini?
Yes. The winery at Via Giare 5 in Fumane sells guided tastings and vineyard and winery visits through its hospitality page and a dedicated mailbox, ospitalita@allegriniwines.com. It publishes no price, no duration and no opening hours, so ask for all three when you write.
Is Villa della Torre the same business?
No. A December 2023 family agreement left the sixteenth-century villa with Marilisa Allegrini and her daughters, along with Poggio al Tesoro and San Polo in Tuscany, while the Fumane winery and Corte Giara went to Franco Allegrini's sons and Walter's daughter Silvia.
Why is La Poja not sold as a Valpolicella?
Because it is only Corvina. The consortium sets Corvina at 45 to 95 per cent of a Valpolicella blend and Rondinella at 5 to 30, so a single-variety Corvina falls outside the denomination and is bottled as Corvina Veronese IGT.
How long does Allegrini dry its grapes?
Amarone fruit spends three to four months in the fruttaio and loses 40 to 45 per cent of its weight; the Recioto selection stays about five months. The consortium describes Amarone drying as running about 100 to 120 days.
