AdventureAreni Wine Festival participationDuring Soviet rule, Armenian village women made wine in secret — no written recipes, to stay below Soviet scrutiny. They hid karasi clay jars in their cellars and taught daughters by hand. The festival that now draws 100+ producers to Areni village every first October weekend is that same wine, now legal. Some karasi jars at the festival are 150 years old. The opening ceremony is a barefoot grape pressing to live duduk music — the same instrument Armenians have played since before Rome existed. The 3,500 AMD tasting glass gets you every table. The cave where this grape was first fermented, 6,100 years ago, is 3 kilometres up the road.
