Most famous wineries hand you a story. This one hands you a dataset. The Catena Institute of Wine runs over 1,000 microvinifications a year, has subdivided the Adrianna Vineyard into more than 200 distinct parcels, and publishes its peer-reviewed bibliography openly. The winery also happens to be a Mayan-inspired pyramid in the middle of Mendoza vineyard country, with a Michelin-starred restaurant attached.

Four tour products, each capped at ten people and each sold by reservation. The Blending Games adds a blending session to the winery tour over two hours. Wine & Music pairs five wines with a musical sensory sequence over one hour forty-five. Family is Everything runs two hours with five wines across the family range. The Wine Meditation and Celtic Astrology experience runs three hours outdoors.

The house publishes no closure months, only two pricing seasons: 3 March to 30 June 2026, and 1 July to 30 September 2026. The later band runs about five per cent higher. If harvest is the draw, note that Adrianna's ripening months are February, March and April, and that maximum temperatures there rarely exceed 30°C during them.

The address is Cobos s/n, Luján de Cuyo (5509), Mendoza — the Agrelo district, between Mendoza city and the Andes. The Catena Institute gives the same location as J. Cobos s/n, Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo. Agrelo is a driving destination: tours involve tasting, so arrange a driver or a tour operator rather than planning to drive yourself back.

Bodega Catena Zapata is a family winery at Cobos s/n in Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo, south of Mendoza city. The house dates itself from 1902, when the Italian immigrant Nicola Catena planted his first Malbec vineyard in Mendoza. It is known for resurrecting Malbec as a fine-wine grape, and for the Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary — which the house places at almost 5,000 feet elevation — perhaps the most studied vineyard in the world.

The family story starts in 1898, when Nicola Catena left Le Marche for Argentina, and the winery dates from his first Mendoza Malbec planting in 1902. His grandson Nicolás spent 1982 to 1985 in California as a visiting scholar in economics at Berkeley, and came home convinced Argentina could compete. The Institute's timeline marks 1984 as the first Catena revolution and 1992 as the second.

The estate's defining site is not at the winery. Adrianna lies in the Tupungato department of the Uco Valley, in what the Catena Institute calls the soon-to-be appellation of Gualtallary. The producer gives its elevation as almost 5,000 feet — roughly 1,500 metres — on a dried river bed of stony, well-drained limestone soils, planted first to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Average annual temperature there is around 13°C.

The producer publishes three different altitudes for the same vineyard: 4,757 feet on the Institute's vineyard file, almost 5,000 feet on the winery's own about page, and almost 1,500 metres in Laura Catena's written account. They describe one site measured and rounded three ways. Ask which figure a tasting-room number refers to before treating any single one as the estate's official measure.
