Why go

This is the house that gave the region its name: Protos owned the brand 'Ribera Duero' and in 1982 authorised its use as the name of the nascent Denominación de Origen, renaming itself Protos — Greek for 'first'. It is also, by the producer's count seconded by the DO regulator's register, the most visited bodega of the Ribera del Duero, with more than 254,000 visitors since opening to the public in 2009.

Two standing tours run in 2026. Visita Denominaciones — 1.5 hours, 30 EUR for adults and 10 EUR for children aged 4–17 — walks the underground ageing bodega and the Rogers–Alonso Balaguer building, ending with three wines, an aperitif and a gift. Visita Grandes Vinos — 2 hours, 50 EUR, adults only — adds a fourth wine from the high-end range. Capacity is limited on every tour, and groups over 20 must enquire ahead.

When to go

The booking calendar runs year-round with dated 2026 products, and no closed season is published. Two calendar notes: during Peñafiel's fiestas, 14–18 August, the shops switch to a special uninterrupted 10:00–15:00 timetable, and the winter holidays bring closures — the Christmas 2025 notice listed 19 and 25 December, 1 and 6 January shut, with short hours on 24 and 31 December. Book the tour first and plan the rest of Peñafiel around the slot.

Getting there

The winery stands at the foot of the hill that carries Peñafiel castle, on the edge of town, its 2008 building connected underground to the old cellars inside the hill. Peñafiel Castle and the Provincial Wine Museum — a museum Protos helped fund in 1999 — sit directly above, so the castle ramparts double as the best viewpoint over the winery's vaulted roof.

About Bodegas Protos

Bodegas Protos is the winery at the foot of the castle hill in Peñafiel, founded in 1927 when eleven local winegrowers formed a cooperative named 'La Primera en la Ribera del Duero' — the first in the Ribera del Duero. Its wines age in more than two kilometres of galleries dug into the mountain beneath Peñafiel castle, beside a 2008 winery designed by Richard Rogers' studio.

History

The dates matter and are different: Protos was founded in 1927; the DO Ribera del Duero on 21 July 1982. The first vintages, 1927 and 1928, took gold at the 1929 Barcelona Universal Exposition. From 1970 the house dug its ageing cellar into the castle mountain, and in 1982 ceded its registered name to the new regulatory council, keeping the motto 'ser primero'. The current president, Edmundo Bayón, is a grandson of one of the eleven founders.

Terroir

The house's flagship single-vineyard red, Finca el Grajo Viejo, is 100% Tinta del País — the local name for Tempranillo — from a vineyard planted more than 80 years ago at 850 metres above sea level. The range spans three appellations from the Peñafiel base: Ribera del Duero since 1927, DO Rueda with Protos Verdejo since 2006, and DO Cigales since 2020, with the Anguix winery in Burgos, bought in 1986, surrounded by old vines.

What insiders know

The booking small print is stricter than the region's norm: reservation is online-only, cancellation is free only up to 48 working hours before the visit, and after that — or on a no-show — 100% of the reservation is charged. The wine-tourism phone line answers only Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 12:00. The 2026 calendar carries dated one-offs too, like an Experiencia Eclipse on 12 August ending with eclipse observation, at 150 EUR, adults only.

Common questions

Can you visit Bodegas Protos without booking?

No. An appointment is essential and every visit is reserved online at enoturismo.bodegasprotos.com. Capacity is limited on all tours, and cancellation is free only up to 48 working hours ahead — later, or on a no-show, the full amount is charged.

What does a visit cost?

In 2026: Visita Denominaciones 30 EUR for adults and 10 EUR for children 4–17 (1.5 hours, 3 wines); Visita Grandes Vinos 50 EUR, adults only (2 hours, 4 wines including the high-end range). Gift vouchers remain valid until 31 December 2026.

Are tours available in English?

The producer does not publish a language list for its tours anywhere official — the booking portal itself runs in Spanish and English. Confirm the language when booking rather than assuming.

Why is the winery called Protos?

Because it gave its old name away. The 1927 cooperative registered 'Ribera Duero' as its brand and in 1982 authorised the new Denominación de Origen to use it, renaming itself Protos — 'first' in Greek — and keeping the slogan 'ser primero'.

Can you eat there?

Yes — Ágora de Protos, the house's restaurant, enoteca and wine bar in its first bodega, serves menus from a 35 EUR weekday Menú Temporada to an eight-course, wine-paired Menú Ágora at 100 EUR (95 EUR for visit holders).
