Calitzdorp: Port Capital of Africa

Calitzdorp is Africa's port wine capital, producing Portuguese-style ports in the Klein Karoo from Tinta Barocca and Touriga Nacional grapes since the 1880s.

What to do there

TastingCalitzdorp: Port Capital of AfricaDe Krans, Boplaas, Axe Hill -- three estates in a Klein Karoo town that produces South Africa's finest port-style wines. Portuguese grape varieties (Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional, Souzao) thrive in the scorching terroir. Boplaas is run by the Carel Nel family, 5th generation. The muscadel dessert wine is a Klein Karoo specialty. This is SA's most unlikely wine region -- the frontier that time forgot.
