Why go
Lafite is a First Growth of the 1855 Médoc classification: 112 hectares, a grand vin averaging 15,000–20,000 cases a year, and a 1987 barrel cellar by Ricardo Bofill buried under two metres of soil. None of it is visitable until January 2028; the estate points visitors to Château Duhart-Milon instead, where tours start at €20 (July 2026).

What to expect
Pauillac's other First Growths still receive visitors. Château Mouton Rothschild takes bookings Monday to Friday, at least two months ahead, in private groups capped at eight, with tours suspended during harvest. Duhart-Milon runs Monday to Friday year-round: a 30-minute guided tasting at €20 needs no reservation, and longer visits are by appointment (July 2026).

When to go
January 2028 is the date that matters — until then Château Lafite Rothschild takes no visitors. Duhart-Milon runs Monday to Friday all year, so a winter trip works as well as a summer one. Mouton Rothschild suspends tours during harvest and closes weekends and public holidays. Pauillac's tourism house opens Monday–Friday 09:30–13:00 and 14:00–19:00 through July and August 2026.

About Chateau Lafite Rothschild
Château Lafite Rothschild sits in Pauillac on the Gironde's left bank, ranked a First Growth in the 1855 classification of the Médoc. It is currently shut to the public: the estate's own visit page states the château is closed to visitors until January 2028 for renovations. The 112-hectare vineyard keeps producing — only public access has stopped.

History
An 1797 deed of sale already described the estate as a Premier Cru of the Médoc, and the 1855 classification confirmed the rank. Baron James de Rothschild bought Lafite at public auction in Paris on 8 August 1868. In 1987 the estate buried Ricardo Bofill's circular barrel cellar under two metres of soil and built its own cooperage the same year.

Terroir
The estate's own account puts the vineyard in three parts: the slopes around the château, the Carruades plateau to the west, and a 4.5-hectare lot in the neighbouring township of Saint-Estèphe — 112 hectares of vines on fine deep gravel mixed with windblown sand over a well-drained tertiary limestone subsoil. Lafite makes its own barrels: the Tonnellerie, built in 1987, draws oak from the Forêt de Tronçais and seasons staves in open air for 18 to 24 months.

What insiders know
Ignore the visiting slots still circulating online. Winetraveler publishes 14:00 and 15:30 appointment times, a fifteen-person maximum and written requests to visites@lafite.com, with no mention of the renovation; Cellar Tours still presents access as confirmed case by case. The estate's own page overrides both: closed to visitors until January 2028.

Common questions
Can I visit Château Lafite Rothschild right now?
No. The estate's own visit page states it is closed to visitors until January 2028 due to renovations. Third-party listings that still publish 14:00 and 15:30 appointment slots have not been updated.
What does the estate suggest instead?
Château Duhart-Milon, its sister Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac, reached through the Duhart-Milon form or visites@duhartmilon.com. Tours run Monday to Friday year-round, from a €20 guided tasting to a €100 introduction to wine tasting (July 2026).
Why is it closed for so long?
An €18 million rebuild of a winery the competition brief says had seen no significant transformation since 1986. Bernard Quirot Architecte with Atelier EGR won from 310 applications; the project adds 4,500 m² and renovates 6,000 m².
Can I still see a First Growth in Pauillac?
Yes — Château Mouton Rothschild receives visitors Monday to Friday by appointment, booked at least two months ahead, in private groups capped at eight, with tours suspended during harvest.
