Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

The reason to stand here is the ground, not a cellar door. Vosne-Romanée holds six grand crus within a few minutes' walk of one another, four of them under monopoly control, while at least forty growers share the rest of the village's vines. The stone cross marking Romanée-Conti sits beside a public vineyard track on the slope above the houses.

A working farming village of a few hundred people rather than a visitor centre. Since 2011 the domaine's offices and principal barrel cellar have stood close to the church in the middle of Vosne-Romanée, behind walls, with nothing to mark them out. There is no tasting room, no shop and no visitor entrance. The waymarked walking route through the vines is the part that is signposted.

The vineyard slope is walkable in any month, since the tracks between the parcels are public. Harvest, usually falling in September, is the exception worth planning around rather than through: working parcels fill with pickers and tractors, and the village lanes narrow accordingly. The 87 km waymarked route runs in four stages, so a visit to the vineyard can be a short section of it.

The domaine sells no visits or tastings, publishes no visitor hours or prices, and, as Tim Atkin MW records, politely turns away those who arrive without an appointment. The workable plan is to book ahead elsewhere in the village: Vosne Tasting Club runs private-only tastings, listed in July 2026 from €125, with wine tours from €725. The vineyard slope stays free and open on public tracks.

Vosne-Romanée sits on the D974 roughly 20 km south of Dijon and 20 km north of Beaune, with Nuits-Saint-Georges five kilometres down the road; Dijon and Beaune are the nearest TGV stations. The GR Grands Crus long-distance trail runs 87 km from Chenôve to Santenay in four stages, on red-and-yellow waymarkers, and passes straight through the village, which is also a stop on Burgundy's Grand Cru Route.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti farms 27.99 hectares of grand cru vineyard around Vosne-Romanée, on the Côte de Nuits slope between Dijon and Beaune. Two of its vineyards are monopoles, owned outright rather than shared: Romanée-Conti at 1.8 hectares and La Tâche at 6.06. The estate sells no visits and no tastings, and the vineyard itself is public ground.

The Benedictine abbey of Saint-Vivant acquired 1.8 hectares of vineyard at Vosne in 1232, and the church held the parcel until 1631, when the de Croonembourg family bought it and renamed it Romanée for reasons nobody wrote down. Louis-François de Bourbon, Prince de Conti, acquired it in 1760 and attached his name. Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet bought it in 1869 and built the estate that exists today.

UNESCO defines Burgundy's climats as small, precisely delimited parcels of vineyard on the slopes of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, on hillsides whose clay-limestone soils vary enormously in composition — which is why neighbouring plots of the same Pinot Noir carry different names and prices. Horses were brought back to work Romanée-Conti and Montrachet precisely to stop tractors compacting that soil.

The domaine publishes a counterfeit warning on its own site, and for anyone buying a bottle it is the most useful page it has. It records that international counterfeiting networks have targeted recent Romanée-Conti vintages, that arrests have been made and that the police operations are not finished, and it instructs buyers to purchase only through the estate's approved distributors and the cavistes they select.
