Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Why go

Few estates publish their holdings the way this one does. Instead of a single hectare total, the domaine lists twelve named sites with individual sizes: Rangen de Thann at 5.5 hectares, Herrenweg at 11.5, Clos Windsbuhl at 5.15, Sommerberg at 0.3. The published tastings draw on named ranges rather than a generic flight — the Roche and lieux-dits wines at the entry tier, lieux-dits and grands crus above it.

What to expect

Three tasting tiers, all by reservation. The Essentials runs one hour with five to seven wines from the Roche and lieux-dits ranges, at €25 per person. Signature of the Terroirs runs ninety minutes with eight wines from the lieux-dits and grand cru ranges including older vintages, after a cellar tour, at €45. The Winemaker's Experience starts at €200 and is a conversation with Olivier or Pierre-Émile Humbrecht.

When to go

Avoid late July and most of August. The estate closes to visits from 20 to 31 July and again from 1 to 20 August, two consecutive windows spanning 20 July to 20 August. Weekends are out year-round, and public holidays close the office as well. That leaves weekday mornings and early afternoons in spring, early summer and autumn, always with a reservation.

Practical details

Book ahead and come on a weekday. Tastings run by reservation only, Monday to Friday, at 10:00 or 14:30, and no other slots are published for the two fixed tiers. The Winemaker's Experience has no scheduled times at all and depends on availability. Office and shop hours are Monday to Friday 08:15–12:00 and 13:00–17:00, closed Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. Under-18s and pets are not admitted.

Getting there

The address is 4 route de Colmar, 68230 Turckheim, and the estate states that its winery has stood there, in the heart of the Herrenweg vineyard, since 1992. No parking guidance and no public-transport route are published anywhere on the site, so plan to arrive by car. The telephone number, +33 3 89 27 02 05, appears in the header of every page.

About Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is a 42-hectare estate at 4 route de Colmar in Turckheim, Alsace, farmed organically and by biodynamic principles. The Humbrecht family has grown vines in Alsace from father to son since 1620, but the domaine under this name was created in 1959. Olivier and Margaret Humbrecht have run it since 1989, and their son Pierre-Émile joined in 2019.

History

Two dates matter and they are not the same date. The Humbrecht family has cultivated vines in Alsace since 1620, father to son. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht itself was created in 1959. Léonard and Geneviève Humbrecht handed the estate to Olivier and Margaret in 1989, and their son Pierre-Émile joined in 2019. The winery moved to its present site on the route de Colmar at Turckheim in 1992.

Terroir

The estate's sites sit on several distinct geologies. It calls Rangen de Thann the most southerly of the Alsace vineyards, above the village of Thann with the river Thur at the foot of the slope. Goldert at Gueberschwihr sits on marine oolitic limestone, which the estate describes as the only such substratum in Alsace. Wineck-Schlossberg at Katzenthal is a steep two-mica granite slope on the edge of the Vosges.

What insiders know

The vineyard payroll is the number worth knowing. Twenty-two people work 42 hectares — a ratio the estate says lets much of the work be done by hand, alongside horse ploughing and its own compost. Output stays small: an average yield of around 35 hectolitres per hectare, and 12,000 to 16,000 cases a year in total across every parcel and cuvée the estate makes.
