Wine Bar Klaava

Klaava is the walk-in wine bar of the team behind Kuurna, next door on Meritullinkatu. Star Wine List reports that Finnish wine magazine Viinilehti named it Wine Bar of the Year within its first year, and the City of Helsinki's MyHelsinki listed it among seven Helsinki wine bars in December 2025. It takes no reservations. The glass list is its own and keeps changing, with themed three-sip tasting sets every three weeks.

A visit is bar service: a glass, or a themed three-sip tasting set, with small plates. The bottle list is shared with Kuurna; the glass list is Klaava's own and changes constantly. It moves between classic European producers and organic and low-intervention wines, from small, sustainably minded producers in many countries, many outside Europe. The plates change too; rarebit, herring toast, smoked cod liver and pâté en croûte have all featured.

Klaava is open Monday to Saturday from 16:00: until 22:00 Monday to Wednesday, 23:00 on Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday. It is closed on Sundays, and the kitchen stops an hour before closing. With no bookings, a seat depends on the room that night. It suits a glass before or after dinner at Kuurna next door, where the better dinner times are often booked well in advance.

Hours: Monday to Wednesday 16:00–22:00, Thursday 16:00–23:00, Friday and Saturday 16:00–00:00; closed Sundays. No reservations: walk in. Glass prices are not published; wine in Helsinki costs more than visitors from Southern Europe are used to, and Coravin pours widen the price range. Direct line: 044 750 4385. Klaava is at Meritullinkatu 6 (Sjötullsgatan 6 in Swedish) in Kruununhaka, next door to Kuurna, whose door on this quiet street is almost unmarked. Senate Square and Helsinki Cathedral are about 350 metres west, and Helsinki Central Station is about 1 km west, so the bar is within walking distance of the city centre.

It opened in summer 2025 and serves wine by the glass and by the bottle with small, seasonal plates. The same team runs the Kasvispuoti vegetable shop in Hakaniemi Market Hall. It is a stop on a Helsinki wine trail.

Kuurna has run in Kruununhaka since 2005, the house says, and Time Out credits it with helping kick-start Helsinki's wave of straightforward bistros. Laura Styyra and Tom Hansen worked there before buying it. Their company registered the name Viinibaari Klaava in November 2024, and the bar opened beside the restaurant in summer 2025. Star Wine List reports a Wine Bar of the Year award from Viinilehti within its first year.

Klaava's vegetables come through Kuurnan Kasvispuoti, the team's organic and biodynamic produce shop in Hakaniemi Market Hall, about 1.2 km north; the house says it delivers to Kuurna, Klaava and other Helsinki restaurants. The street name, Meritullinkatu (Sjötullsgatan), dates from 1928 and recalls the old customs and packing house; from 1820 it was Konstantininkatu.
