Pereira D'Oliveira

D'Oliveiras took first place in the inaugural IWSC Top 50: Wine list in November 2025, and its Funchal lodge lets anyone walk in and taste. João Pereira D'Oliveira founded the house in 1850, and his family still runs it. It holds about 1.5 million litres of old wine in cask. For a guided tour with a museum, Blandy's in the old town takes reservations.

The visit starts in a strongly aromatic barrel room, with bottles from the early 20th century along the walls. Staff pour three styles of Madeira, sometimes with honey cake and crackers. Visitors who show interest have been poured older wines; in July 2025 one was poured a 1900 Moscatel. Many labels give the bottling year, which shows how long the wine spent in cask.

Go on a weekday. The listed hours are Monday to Friday 09:00–18:00 and Saturday 09:30–13:00, with no Sunday hours, so plan around Saturday afternoons and Sundays. In 2025 visitors described busloads of tourists coming and going while they tasted. The house has no active website to announce changes, so treat the hours as a guide and allow for a closed door.

Tasting: the standard pour of three wines is free and needs no booking, sometimes with bolo de mel (honey cake). A guide updated in November 2025 says older wines cost a fee; a July 2025 visitor was poured them free and left a tip, so ask first. Bottles: a 75 cl D'Oliveiras Seco 5 Anos costs €21.49 at Continente online; a 1971 Terrantez costs €599.00 at Garrafeira Nacional. The lodge ships wine bought there. Hours: Monday to Friday 09:00–18:00, Saturday 09:30–13:00.

The lodge is at Rua dos Ferreiros 107, in the centre of Funchal. From Praça do Município, walk uphill along Rua dos Ferreiros past the Colégio church and the entrance to the Jesuits' Pátio dos Estudantes; D'Oliveiras is just beyond, on the same street. Pereira D'Oliveira is a family Madeira wine house whose tasting and sales lodge stands at Rua dos Ferreiros 107 in central Funchal. Its bottles carry the name D'Oliveiras. The house makes around 150,000 litres a year from Tinta Negra and from Sercial, Verdelho, Boal and Malvasia, with Terrantez when it can be found, and keeps its old vintages in cask until they are bottled to order.

João Pereira D'Oliveira, from a family of grape growers in São Martinho, founded the house in 1850. A marriage in the early 1930s brought in the Camacho firm and, with it, Julio Augusto Cunha & Sons, founded in 1820. Brothers Aníbal and Luís joined in 1968, when the firm sold only on the island. The family bought the lodge building, which dates from 1619, in 1911, and its neighbour Barros e Sousa in 2013.

Look at the building before going in: it dates from 1619 and was the main entrance for students of Funchal's former Jesuit College, and the stretch of street between the Colégio and Rua dos Netos was once called Estudo.
