Shapotou (20km west of Zhongwei, southeast Tengger Desert edge) is China's first national desert ecological reserve — 4,599 hectares combining desert, Yellow River, mountains, oases. High-end resorts offer local wine under star-filled skies; camel treks, sand sledding, Yin-Yang S-bend vistas.
