Tokaj Wine Museum

Why go

This is the Tokaj stop that puts the region in company rather than in isolation. The wine museum presents nine European World Heritage wine regions alongside Tokaj-Hegyalja, drawing specialities from Austrian, German, Swiss, Italian, French and Portuguese growing areas. For a traveller who has spent three days underground in Tokaj cellars and wants to know what the region is being measured against, that comparison is the exhibit.

What to expect

Two buildings, two registers. At Serház út 55 the display is interactive: the museum states the Tokaj-Hegyalja region can be roamed on foot, by bicycle, by car or even by balloon without leaving the building, and it advertises a 5D painting. At Bethlen Gábor utca 7 the material is older — archaeology, ethnography, church art, painted merchant rooms, and a cellar lined with Gönc barrels.

When to go

Summer hours run 1 April to 31 October, Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:00. From 1 November to 31 March the week shortens to Tuesday to Saturday, so winter loses Sunday as well as Monday, and the ticket desk shuts at 16:30 in both seasons. The museum closes on 1 November, and again from 19 December to 11 January 2027.

Practical details

Full admission is 2,000 Ft, reduced 1,000 Ft, family 5,000 Ft, and groups over fifteen pay 1,800 Ft each; a combined ticket runs 3,400 Ft full price and 8,500 Ft for a family. Prices include 27 percent VAT and were published in July 2026. Forint cash and bank cards are taken; the SZÉP leisure card is not. The museum publishes no online booking — write to info@tokajimuzeum.hu, or info@bormuzeum.eu for the wine museum.

Getting there

Both sites are inside Tokaj town and walkable from the main square. The wine museum shares its Serház út 55 address with the town's cultural centre and the Rákóczi Cellar, so a museum visit and a cellar visit are the same street. The nearest working estate with a published open invitation to visitors is Disznókő at Mezőzombor, about 9.5 kilometres away.

About Tokaj Wine Museum

The Tokaj Wine Museum is the wine half of a two-site museum in Tokaj town, north-east Hungary. The Világörökségi Bormúzeum fills 2,000 square metres of a former brewery at Serház út 55, in what its operator calls the town's cultural quarter; the older Tokaji Múzeum stands on the main square at Bethlen Gábor utca 7. One tariff covers both, and both sit inside Tokaj.

History

Tokaj's town museum was assembled by amateurs. The collection joined the county museum organisation in 1962 and stayed in the Greek Orthodox church until 1974, when a cellar museum opened in a several-hundred-year-old wine cellar opposite. In 1978 the county bought one of the Greek merchant houses on the main square, the Karácsony house, and a new mixed-theme exhibition opened there on 22 May 1985.

Terroir

The museum sits at the geographic reason Tokaj exists. The region forms a triangle from Abaújszántó to Tokaj and up to Sátoraljaújhely on the Slovak border — around 5,500 hectares of vineyard across 27 towns and villages — and the humidity that makes noble rot possible drifts up from the Bodrog and the Tisza. Tokaj town was the commercial centre that gave the region its name.

What insiders know

The free-entry calendar is the planning lever, and it is published only in Hungarian. Admission costs nothing for every visitor regardless of citizenship on 15 March, 20 August and 23 October, and nothing on the first Sunday of each month for anyone under 26. The 1,000 Ft reduced rate is narrower than it looks: it is written for Hungarian or EEA citizens aged 6 to 26 or 62 to 70.

Common questions

Is the museum step-free?

No. The Tokaji Múzeum building is not accessible, and its own page gives the reason: the house went up as a dwelling in the 1790s and became a museum only in 1985, and the heritage authority permitted no significant structural alteration then or since. Tactile maps sit on each floor, guide dogs are admitted, and sign-language visits can be arranged on booking.

What does the combined ticket cover?

The tariff lists it at 3,400 Ft full price and 8,500 Ft for a family, but the site does not publish which addresses it admits to. One operator runs two buildings in Tokaj, so it is worth settling at the desk before paying.

Can I visit outside opening hours?

Only by written arrangement made in advance, and a surcharge of 500 Ft per person applies on top of the normal tariff. Requests go to info@tokajimuzeum.hu, with a phone number attached.

Is there anything for school groups?

Museum classes cost 1,000 Ft per person, are pitched at ages 10 to 18, run 60 minutes and take a maximum of 30 per group — but only on weekdays between 8:00 and 14:00, at the wine museum.
