Hotel Glacier: The Barn Cellar and the House's Own Wine

On Sundays the Glacier's sommelier pours three wines with a Swiss cheese and meat board in the hotel's wine cellar, a barn the house says held Swiss wrestling from 1945. On other days, come for lunch or dinner and order the house's own wine, a Pinot Blanc made for it near Sion: 310 bottles of the 2024. VINUM's Swiss Wine List Award gave the Glacier's list its Fine Dining category in the 2025 and 2026 editions. The same owners run stop 1.

1. 1 Stand at the Door the Glacier Ice Named History · Free

   The house and its name, from the street.

   The house dates the Glacier to 1864 and says it is named for the ice once cut from the Lower and Upper Grindelwald glaciers for cooling.

   Where: Endweg 55, about a 10-minute walk from Grindelwald station.

2. 2 Sit Down in the Barn That Became a Wine Cellar Wine · Price: moderate · Optional

   The Sunday tasting, in the room the house says was a barn.

   The house's own history says this barn, today the wine cellar, held Swiss wrestling from 1945, and dates hotel and barn to the middle of the 19th century; in the house's story, as owner Jan Pyott tells it, the room is 320 years old.

   The house says Niklaus Wittwer makes the GLACIER wine for it alone, from vines near Sion in the Valais, choosing one barrique a year; the 2024 is a Pinot Blanc, an edition of 310 bottles.

   What: one glass beside chef Marco Allemann's food, à la carte or five courses.

• Before it held wine, the room was a sheep barn, then a wrestling hall, then the gym and music room of the school on Endweg.

• Groups of six or more, allergies, diets or a vegetarian menu: email the house at least 24 hours ahead.

• Private tastings are on request, and the cellar can be booked for a private wine experience for up to 16 people.
