Stand at the Thymeli and look up at 55 rows of limestone seats rising to 14,000 capacity - every person who ever sat there was participating in Dionysian ritual, not entertainment.

   Agiorgitiko - 'St George's grape' - is what ancient Greeks prized at symposiums, philosophical drinking parties where wine was watered for sobriety to sustain hours of debate about beauty, truth, and gods. The Nemea wine region (40 minutes from Epidaurus via the Peloponnese wine road) produces 31% of national wine yet barely anyone outside Greece knows the name. Stop at any of the 40 Nemea wineries and ask for a tasting of their Agiorgitiko reserve or 'Grand Cru' tier. When they pour it, ask: 'Is this what they drank at symposiums?' The answer is essentially yes. Budget tastings run under €15.

   Read the Stone That Survived 2,400 Years of Audience

   The Sanctuary of Asklepios surrounding the theater was where the ancient world came to be healed — in their sleep, by a god, in a dormitory built for divine dreams. The theater was the entertainment wing of a hospital.

   The Enkoimeterion was the incubation dormitory where sick pilgrims slept, hoping Asklepios would heal them in dreams. The theater wasn't entertainment - music, singing, and drama were prescribed as therapy. Drama WAS medicine. Theater and hospital were the SAME INSTITUTION. After the theater, follow the site path to the Tholos (circular building whose purpose archaeologists still debate), then read the site panels noting the theater's 14,000 capacity against the sanctuary's use as a healing center. This cognitive dissonance - massive entertainment venue inside medical facility - is the experience. UNESCO designated this site for 'valuable insight into healing cults of Greek and Roman times.'

   🔄 BACKUP: The on-site Archaeological Museum contains surgical instruments, votive offerings, and inscribed tablets from healed patients describing miraculous cures. Small but devastating collection.
