   Anthony Benakis was an Alexandrian Greek cotton merchant who spent his fortune collecting Greek art across every period, then handed it all to the Greek state in 1931 and funded the museum building too. The result is the only place in Athens where you can walk from a prehistoric clay figurine to a 20th-century folk costume in a single afternoon. At 1 Koumbari St (5 min from Syntagma, Metro: Evangelismos), collect the floor plan and start at the top floor, working DOWN chronologically — the physical descent mirrors the temporal journey. Give 30 minutes to the ancient ceramics rooms and note how decoration evolves: Geometric (abstract patterns), Archaic (stiff figures appear), Classical (naturalistic movement), Hellenistic (Dionysiac scenes grow more explicit and theatrical).

   Find How Christianity Replaced Dionysus Using the Same Symbols

   The Benaki's Byzantine rooms show the same wine iconography — grapes, vines, the cup — transferred wholesale from Dionysus to Christ.

   Early Christians didn't abolish Dionysus — they rebranded him. The vine and grape motif that decorated Greek symposium kraters appears almost identically on early Christian mosaics and metalwork in the Benaki's Byzantine collection. The cup that Dionysus held became the Eucharistic chalice, and icon embroideries use vine scrolls visually indistinguishable from Hellenistic Dionysiac decoration — deliberate appropriation of symbols the population already understood. In the ancient section, mentally photograph vine/grape decoration on a symposium vessel, then walk to the Byzantine section (follow the chronological floor plan) and look for the same motif on ecclesiastical textiles or metalwork, specifically wine-related pieces like chalices and communion vessels.

   Every Thursday from 6pm to midnight, the Benaki permanent collection is free. The museum stays open until midnight.

   The permanent collection (all floors of ancient and Byzantine Greece) is completely free from 6pm every Thursday until midnight — the €12 normal admission is not charged, and temporary exhibitions are ticketed separately at €8. Arrive at 6pm Thursday at the main entrance and state you're here for the permanent collection. The Thursday evening crowd is lighter than daytime weekends, you'll have cases largely to yourself, and the neoclassical building takes on a different quality in evening light. Plan 90 minutes minimum for the ancient and Byzantine floors.

   🔄 BACKUP: If your visit falls on another day, admission is €12 for the permanent collection (Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat 10am-6pm, Sun 10am-4pm). Closed Tuesdays. Children under 18 free. Check benaki.org for any temporary closures.
