   Philip II was assassinated in 336 BC during a wedding feast heavy with wine, and Alexander watched his father die in the andrōnes (symposium dining halls) that you're walking through right now. These rooms served one purpose: drinking wine, making alliances, and deciding who lived and who didn't. The scale is staggering — 104.5 x 88.5 meters makes this the LARGEST building of classical-era Greece, bigger than Athens' famous Parthenon. Walk 400 meters uphill from the Royal Tombs museum to find the androns identifiable by their mosaic-bordered floors and single-door arrangement designed to fit the maximum number of reclining couches along walls. Count the visible androns — the palace ran multiple dining rooms simultaneously for different ranks of guests.

   Locate the Tholos - Where Macedonian Kings Held Judgment

   The circular tholos on the palace's south side may have been where Macedonian kings announced life-and-death decisions — a court of judgment designed for complete exposure with no pillars to hide behind. Circular rooms carry special ritual weight in Macedonian architecture, appearing in the Royal Tombs below (Tomb II has a circular chamber beyond its rectangular antechamber) and repeated across religious, funerary, and judicial spaces deliberately. Stand in the center of the circular foundation where the king's sightline reached anyone who appeared before him. Ask yourself: is this architecture designed for justice, or for theater?

   Philip spent the 4th century BC building something bigger than Athens' 5th-century definition of Greek civilization. This palace at Aigai is 104.5 x 88.5 meters; the Parthenon is 69.5 x 30.9 meters. Philip wasn't just building a home — he was making a political statement that Macedonia was the center, not Athens. UNESCO inscribed it in 1996 for "exceptional architecture and testimony to the transition between city-states and empires." Look out from the western edge toward Mount Olympus (visible on clear days, 40km north) — when Alexander left here to conquer the known world, he had grown up believing he lived in the most important place on earth because this palace was designed to make him believe exactly that.
