   Mavroudi was a nearly-forgotten indigenous Thracian red grape when Tsantali began reviving it in the 1990s - not a famous international variety, not even widely known in Greece, just a local grape that ancient farmers grew in these hills for thousands years. Visit Tsantali Maronia Estate (near the town of Maronia) and during the vineyard walk, ask specifically: 'Can you show me the Mavroudi block?' The vines are visually distinct - darker wood, smaller clusters than the Syrah planted alongside them. This wine shouldn't exist.

   Backup: If the vineyard walk isn't offered, the tasting room stocks Mavroudi. Order it and ask the guide to explain the rescue story in their own words. Tsantali staff know it well - it's their founding narrative for this estate.

2. 2 Taste Greece's First Large-Scale Organic Wine Wine · Price: moderate

   In 1995, Tsantali became the FIRST Greek winery to implement sustainable viticulture at large scale - certified organic before organic was commercially fashionable, before Greek wine tourism existed. Now they are the largest producer of organic wines in Greece. In the tasting room, order the 'KANENAS' wine series ('KANENAS' means 'nobody' - a dark irony referencing Odysseus's 'Nobody' trick on the Cyclops) and smell the Maronia white before anything else - the sea air in the nose is immediate and specific to this coastal elevation.    The Tsantali family has been making wines, tsipouro, and ouzo since 1890 - 135 years as of 2025. Five generations have worked this trade through WWI, WWII, Nazi occupation, civil war, and the junta. The Maronia estate represents their deliberate return to the ancient heartland: when they decided to make wines worthy of Homer's landscape, they came HERE, to Ismaros, to the coast where Maron gave Odysseus those twelve jars.
