The Story
Fiano was prized by ancient Romans who called it 'Vitis apiana' (bee's grape) because bees loved its sweet aromatics. It nearly went extinct in the 20th century. Now it's Campania's greatest white—honeyed, nutty, age-worthy.
Insider Story
Fiano di Avellino (Campania) is the benchmark. The grape grows at 400-700m altitude on volcanic soils. The wines are honeyed, nutty, mineral—nothing like typical Italian whites.
By 1970, only a few hectares of Fiano remained. The Mastroberardino family saved it, cataloguing clones and lobbying for DOCG status (granted 2003).
Fiano ages brilliantly—10-20 years for top examples. Aged Fiano develops hazelnut, honey, and smoke notes. It's Italy's answer to white Burgundy.
But most consumers don't know Fiano. It remains undervalued—$20-50 for wines that rival $80-150 Burgundy.
Technical Deep Dive
Fiano has moderate acidity (5.5-6.5 g/L), honeyed and nutty aromatics, and waxy texture. Alcohol: 12.5-14% ABV.
Volcite soils (volcanic) produce mineral, structured Fiano. Clay soils produce richer, fruitier styles.
Oak: some producers use oak aging (6-12 months) for complexity. Others use stainless steel to preserve freshness. Both styles work.
Industry Secrets
Fiano di Avellino Riserva (24+ months aging) is the top tier. Wines like Mastroberardino 'Radici' and Pietracupa age 20+ years. $30-60 vs. $100+ for comparable white Burgundy.
