The Story
Müller-Thurgau was created in 1882 by Swiss scientist Hermann Müller (from Thurgau). He claimed it was Riesling x Silvaner. DNA testing proved him wrong—it's Riesling x Madeleine Royale. Oops.

Hermann Müller created Müller-Thurgau to combine Riesling's quality with earlier ripening. He claimed the crossing was Riesling x Silvaner. For 100 years, everyone believed him.
In 1996, DNA testing revealed the truth: Müller-Thurgau is Riesling x Madeleine Royale (an obscure table grape). Hermann Müller was wrong—or lying.
Müller-Thurgau became Germany's most planted grape in the 1970s-80s. It was easy to grow, high-yielding, and made inoffensive wine. Liebfraumilch was mostly Müller-Thurgau.
The backlash came. Critics called it 'bland' and 'characterless.' Plantings dropped 50%+ since 1990. But in Alto Adige (Italy), producers make serious Müller-Thurgau—aromatic, mineral, age-worthy. It can be good.
Technical Deep Dive
Müller-Thurgau has moderate acidity (5-6 g/L), floral and grapey aromatics, and early ripening. Alcohol: 11-12.5% ABV.
High yields (100+ hL/ha) produce thin, bland wine. Low yields (40-50 hL/ha) produce concentrated, aromatic wine. The difference is dramatic.
Alto Adige's high-altitude sites (600-800m) produce the best Müller-Thurgau—aromatic, mineral, fresh.
Industry Secrets
Alto Adige Müller-Thurgau is a secret weapon. $15-25 bottles from producers like Tiefenbrunner and Abbazia di Novacella rival $40-60 wines. But nobody buys it because 'Müller-Thurgau' sounds cheap.
